While I condemn the words that he said, I don't agree at all on the double standard.

Whether you are a rapper, entertainer, radio host.... words are words. One person should not be fired while others are allowed to use similar expression or curse words.

i agree. how about the kids that use those words in school. nothing is done to them

Then all those rappers singing about Beotches and Hoes....should be fired too!!

But they bleep that out on public radio.

Not "99 problems but a bi&ch ain't one". I didn't even realize it until my DH's friend's 9 year old daughter was singing along with it.Chat Icon

But "b!tch" is allowed to be said on TV as well - it's one of those "accepted" curse words, like Damn or Hell.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I think they did the right thing.

He's claims to be a journalist. He said something racist and sexist and completely insensitive. And had to be convinced to apologize for it.

He's not an "entertainer" - a comedian or a rap singer can get away with different things because it's a different venue.

If Katie Couric had said it, she would have been fired. If Jon Stewart said it, he would have been fired.

If Chris Rock says it, he's fine. If 50 Cent or Eminem says it, they're fine.

It's apples and oranges here - can't compare the two in my book.

i'm with you...but i'm not getting into this heated battle!

I find it interesting that the same people who are saying he shouldn't be fired because it's free speech and he should be able to say whatever he wants are also saying rappers, comedians etc. shouldn't be able to say them.

Can't have it both ways.

Either EVERYBODY should be able to say whatever they want whenever they want to whomever they want or everyone should be censored.

As much as I love the idea of free speech, it's almost impossible in practice without causing major damage.

Re: They just announced on WFAN that Imus has been fired - his show has been cancelled for good

We are heading down a slippery slope. When people can start picking and choosing which words are acceptable and which are not, we will slowly lose our rights to free speech.

It is important that people have the right to free speech, no matter how offensive they are. That is why the KKK is able to march and have protests and rallies-because the constitution protects that right.

When we start censoring people, is when we will be heading down a dangerous path. Eventually, what you want to say will be against the rules, and then what?

I think what he said is repulsive, but I'm disappointed that he's been fired since there seems to be a double standard in what some people can say and get away with and others can't.

To me, free speech does not mean you can say anything at the workplace and not be reprimanded or disciplined for it. No one ever said that you are allowed to say whatever you want WHEREVER you want - if your employer or boss feels that what you have said puts them in a bad light - whether with sponsers, listeners, customers, what have you - it is their right to get rid of you, if they choose to.

Rappers are different - I do not like what they say or their messages, so I do not listen - but they are not going to a workplace and saying these things - they are being pursued and given contracts by record companies who want to market their specific "brand" of music - for better or worse.

You think if someone showed up at their job one day wearing a shirt that said F white people or F black people that there wouldn't be serious serious ramifications? Freedom of speech? Not in the workplace - not unless it's your own business, store, radio station, etc.

I so agree Al Sharpton is such a hypocrite, he is so quick to jump when something is said about an african american but what about when something racist is said about a white person? That is ok! It is such bull I am not sayiing what Imus said was ok but if he is going to get heat then so should all of the rappers saying stuff about us white people in their songs, and to say its for entertainment is ridiculous, as Imus is entertainment.

Agreed, and where's Jesse' Jackson's apoology for the DUKE LACROSSE incident.Chat Icon

I hate how this incident has empowered Al Sharpton - that man should not have a platform in this country and yet politicians continue to indulge him and give him power.

I wonder what Howard Stern will have to say about this tomorrow. I know that he and Imus were arch rivals back in the day

This man is a joke. I don't think he does a service to anyone but to himself by appearing on TV for his moment of fame. I don't think he really cares about anyone but himself. Always finding an opportunity to blame someone, making his own little stories so it fits the "conspiracy theory" without actual facts.

I believe there are better advocates than him that would do a much better job representing the black community. People who actually care.

OK..... I am ready to be flamed now!
