things no one tells you about L&D....
thought I'd let you know what I learned about L&D....
if you want an epi tell everyone right away from the second you enter the hospital.... the elevator operator, custodian, nurse, Dr.... the more people that knows, the faster you will get it!
the epi is SO worth while!
Bring your own maxi pads- the hospital ones are really absorbant but don't stay put well.
also pack prepration H... It's very useful!
you will bleed A LOT! I mean tons! you will ruin all your underwear and what ever clothes you bring
you will hurt.. be really soar after the birth. your cootch will hurt and you will have difficulty moving around, especally from a sitting position to a standing position.
ask the nurse for lots of ice packs and heat packs. They will make you feel much better! Especially the ice packs- sit on them!
take any pain meds they offer. get the prescription right away. if you dont need them you dont have to take them. I said I didn't need them but when I wanted them badly it took 12 hours to get them!
pack snacks for yourself for when you are hungry at 1am
bring your own pillow.
take everything from the hospital that you can! formula, onsies, blankets... the nurse told me that she'd pack up the cart the baby is on with tons of stuff and to take it all. what was really helpful to take was the pads the nurse puts under you (on the bed) to catch any "leaks" . Also, the ice packs and heat packs- very helpful at home
if you have an episotomy- take the peri bottle they provide for you.
If I can think of anything else to share I'll updat this post.
Good luck! I can't wait to meet all your little ones!

I agree. And when they give you the sitz bath (if you go natural) use it! I didn't since it grossed me out for some reason, and when I finally did a few days later I felt so much better!
And if you have a c-section, the nurses will be very concerned about you having a bowel movement, going natural I wasn't asked about it at all.

oh yeah- that's what I'd wanted to also post.... you don't have to have a bowel movement if you went naturally to be discharged... they said and it was true that you wouldn't have a BM for 5 dys after you delivered. They will give you a stool softner and believe me, take it! When you do have a BM it's not as bad as you think.
The nurses are concerned though how much you pass gas and will constantly ask you about it. At first I was and said NO! I didn't want to admit it until a nurse told me that they need to know.

What is a sitz bath?
It's like this big bowl that you put on the toilet. It has a bag with a hose that you fill with warm water and put up higher than the toilet and it has this sort of valve that lets the water flow in and hit the area. I don't know why, but it really helps with the discomfort from the stitches.

also, invest in dremaplast for the stitches. really helped! So did tucks pads- put htem on the maxi- from front ot back. To help with the itching and pain of stitches I sat in the shower (at home where I know it's clean)- rally made me feel better.

I had a c/s and you could not have regular food, only a liquid diet until you pass gas.

Thank you SO MUCH!!
I have a question- can you wear regular underwear after you give birth, or do you need to get special maternity underwear. I am 8 1/2 months and have been wearing regular underwear all along. TIA!

I wore regular underwear. But when I was bleeding so much I wore granny panties so that I didn't care if they had to be tossed.

I was thinking about picking up a few 3 packs of bikini underwear from Old Navy for that reason. So if I have to chuck them, I won't care.

I'm confused -- do you mean "vaginally" instead of "naturally"? I thought "naturally" meant no epi? I'm new at all this and it so confusing.

Another one. There are many that are terrified about p00ping during L&D, well, I can tell you that if it does happen, you really aren't going to care! lol you just want that kid out and your OB may actually root you on because it's an indication that you are pushing correctly!

Re: things no one tells you about L&D....
Good to know, I hope to VBAc if possible.
I had a c/s the first time, adn I had little to no bleeding at all, which I found great because its a little tough at first to get up and down. I also was on a liquid diet for almost 3 days because I just couldn't pass gas. I almost lied and said I did just so I could eat, but I didn't. Which is good because a friend of mine ate right away and had horrible bowel distention and gas because the bowels weren't in working order yet

Don't be scared. It wasn't that bad. I just got uncomfortable when I was sitting or standing for a long time, but it wasn't horrible pain or anything. I was more shocked by how much you bleed. I hadn't expected that. I don't know why, I was pretty naive about the whole process I guess.
My biggest fear after was popping a stitch or two while pooping, but my OB laughed at me and said it would be pretty hard to do. I was still scared.

GUILTY! I did that... just as they pulled Alex out of me (c-section). They pulled her out, exclaimed "it's a girl!" and as they were bringing her over to me to look at her, I threw up all over DH's lap

I agree about the bleeding. When delivering I literally thought someone came and poured a bucket of something down there, and it was the same sound like a bucket of water being dropped and it was all blood. I thought I was hemorraging or something..LOL and kept yelling was that amount of blood normal...and they dont tell you how much to expect...

Re: things no one tells you about L&D....
Ask for a sleeping pill the first night (after you give birth). I didn't think I could take one b/c I thought I might be BFing (although I ended up letting them bottlefeed him through the night). I was sooooo exhausted but ended up sleeping for only 45 minutes that night. The next day my dr told me it's from all the adrenaline and I should have asked for a pill and they would have woke me up to BFd .
I used the hospital undies, I liked them a lot b/c they were kind of like the boy shorts and they held everything in place
