Why don't you look on petfinder.com? They have puppies that need homes on there.
Also if there is a breed that you like you can check out breed rescues.
And as an aside, pit bulls and rotties can make great pets, they just have a bad rap.

Bj and Jan---that is very nice taht you volunteer. maybe you could answer some questions about shelters. My BF and I went to look at a few shelters yesterday. Its seemed as though they were filled with pit bulls and rotweillers. I didn't see any dogs that I would be able to train in my own home. Of course, my heart went out to every single one of them but I was looking for a puppy. My question to you... do I have a chance of finding a nice puppy in a shelter or do I need to have a connection with someone from the shelter. I know about teh waiting lists but.... should I bother?

If you click on the link to the last hope shleter, there are pictures of dogs that are currently there in another link. They are all there except Jensen, he was adopted. The shelter has a maximum capacity of 10, right now there are currently two pitbulls there and 5 or 6 other dogs that aren't pitbulls. A few of them are ALREADY trained. One dogs owner moved to florida. He tied the dog to the babylon shelters fence with a note. Another had kids that developed allergies. One owner died. Some of the dogs are GOOD dogs. Some we have no history on, but some volunteers bring them home with them to see how they are. They tell us if they are good with kids, good with cats, other dogs.

You really should check it out. I am there Tuesday nights around 6pm. I walk the dogs with other volunteers.

I have two wonderful dogs that were adopted as puppies from North Shore Animal league. When we went to get our first dog, there were a ton of puppies there. All types and sizes.

I have a jack russell who might need a new home soon :(

hes precious i promise!

but seriously- stay away from high strung dogs like jacks unless you can devote the time, attention and have a yard for them to run in.

Everyone here has been giving great advice, but I wanted to add that there are puppies out there! Try the shelters each week and also like someone else suggested you can try petfinder or google a specific breed rescue! Good luck and make sure you post pics when you get your new bundle of joy!

I strongly recommend a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel. Our Cavalier has the perfect temperament. He is eager to please, easy to train, wonderful with children, and always want to cuddle and play. We did a lot of research to find our pup. I was actually just looking at a Cavalier rescue site:
