This is a story the community should be up in arms about
What happened to poor Maximus is a tragedy and I am so glad they caught the perp...but
this story, and the lack of news coverage up to this point, blows my mind
Please pray for this family. No one should go through this. No one.
I can't help but at the idea that an animal being murdered received more press coverage and had a higher reward than a murdered human being.

I heard about this this morning... but maybe there is a reason we haven't heard about it, maybe the family didn't want it publicized...

it was in Newsday since the day of the attack. Just in the 4th, 5th pages.
from what I understand, the family/friends have been as well at the lack of coverage.

Honestly, I feel like much of what goes on in Brentwood is ignored. There are murders there literally every day...This is where the dog abuse occurred, where a rabbit was recently skinned alive while being tortured and fed to a pit bull...It's sad, but I think it's just become commonplace. If it was in Great Neck, you know it would be page 1.

Disturbing story with so many loose ends. The person was familiar with the house...the aunt & uncle didn't hear anything.
Sad...
I abhor Newsday - I think it's faux-journalism and their "comments" section in the on-line community is absolutely disgusting. This is the first I am hearing of this story. I can't help but think that the location of the crime scene has something to do with the lack of coverage.

If people are being bludgeoned to death in their homes every day, there is something EXCESSIVELY wrong with the Suffolk County PD (for all the money they make)
stuff like this doesn't even happen "every day" in some of the worst nabes in Brooklyn.
ETA: the dog crime got people nuts...there has to be a reason people knew about that, and it happened in the same community.

Maybe not bludgeoned, but shot, beat to death, etc...The Bloods and Crypts are very active in the community from what I hear.

Murders really happen in brentwood everyday?
this seems like a pretty horrific story- but it happened in March- and with no suspect- I don't know what the media would report everyday about - I actually think it's good that Newsday is covering it again
all stories are not covered equally- which is sad but true- while I think horrible things happening to animals is upsetting- I never understood why people get more upset about things happening to animals over people

Re: This is a story the community should be up in arms about
nothing came up about a higer then average murder rate- but this came up
Brentwood- top 100 places to live according to money magazine
if the crime statics are correct- Brentwood is better then average - if I am reading this right

Re: This is a story the community should be up in arms about
Thank you Beth.
this is more what I thought. I have a friend that I've known for years that lived there and her family continues to do so...
and I have a friend I've known for about 2 years now, who lives there...I shudder to think something could happen to either of them (or their families) and it would only be worthy of a Page 4 Newstory b/c such things are "commonplace" (which seems to be an Urban Legend in and of itself)

wow, CNN was way off on that one. Brentwood is definitely one of the more dangerous towns in Suffolk without a doubt. I think gang crime statistics are not often reported, but I don't know if those crime stats are right anyway--I know just from reading the police blotter than property crime in that area should be higher. I think they manipulate those numbers.

Re: This is a story the community should be up in arms about
I remember this getting a lot of coverage when it happened. But like most murders, unfortunately if there are no updates it gets pushed to the back of our minds.
At least for me anyway.
And I've always noticed people get more upset over animal abuse than murders. Probably because we see murders everyday on the news and it's not as shocking anymore. Which is pretty sad.

I know for a fact that it is commonplace. A friend of mine is a principal in one of the schools and the Bloods and Crypts start as early as 4th and 5th grade...There is gang violence in the school and outside of school grounds with guns, knives, you name it. It is definitely one of the more dangerous districts and areas in Suffolk.

Re: This is a story the community should be up in arms about
I really don't think Brentwood has murders everyday
I live in Queens- and we don't even have murders everyday
everyone in Brentwood would be dead already if that was true- it's not a huge town
and I think we would here more about it if there were- esp b/c it's next to Dix Hills- which isn't exactly the worst place to live

I don't believe that gang members call the police to report such crimes and tell on their rival members. But maybe they go to the SCPD for help with gang issues..

Re: This is a story the community should be up in arms about
Hey, everyone can move to Brentwood for all I care. All I am saying is that there is definitely a great deal of violence in that town, more so than any surrounding neighborhood. Deaths every day? Maybe not, but stabbings and violent crimes yes. You'll also notice that a higher number than average of animal cruelty cases occur in Brentwood.
Even if it is gang violence, even if they were drug dealers, it deserves coverage, no one will argue that.

I live in Park Slope, Brooklyn...a very "gentrified" "upscale" neighborhood. I have lived there my whole life and guess what...
there is drug dealing, gang activity, murders, rapes, robberies, muggings...you name it, we have it.
it is still one of the most expensive places to purchase a home, and a GREAT place to live and raise a family.
no neighborhood is safe from these things, but the notion that something is "commonplace" enough for people not to care is tantamount to aiding and abetting...if you keep turning a blind eye, people are emboldened.

so you are saying the gang members in brentwood kill each other every day- make the bodies disapear and no one- not even their mothers report them being missing to the police
so that's 365 people a year vanishing in brentwood? that makes no sense
Brentwood isn't my first choice- but it's not that scary

Brentwood isn't really upscale or expensive so I wouldn't compare it to Park Slope. It is what it is. I would not live there, and I would rather not drive through there if I can help.
The gang violence in the schools is well-known among anyone working in the area or teaching. I don't work there or live there, but I know educators who do work there who I think are just feeling helpless as to stop the gangs.
As I said, if all of you move there maybe it will change things, so that would be good.

They kill and hurt each other, yes. What do you think mobs do with bodies? They get rid of them. If it is reported, it is a missing person, not a homicide.

ETA: I hate Newsday, and I never really understood why some stories are so heavily publisized while others are ignored - even when they are so similiar in magnitude. I am sure it all comes down to $$$ and connections.

I am not comparing it to PS. I am saying the things you describe are happening everywhere...not just in Brentwood.
and that "bad seeds" can grow anywhere, even in areas that are known to be "good". it's all in the spinning.
not only that, but this was not a "gang" related crime. this was an attack on 3 sisters in their sleep. in their home. where they should be safe. I cannot believe that people would "file" this in the "same ol' Brentwood" catergory. especially when the perp is STILL at large.
I would be pretrified. and I don't scare easily (unless it's lightening...the things that scare me most are the things I cannot fight!)
