This is exactly why I will never have plastic surgery!
They are saying Kanye West's mother died after complications from plastic surgery. Can you imagine ending up dying as a complication of surgery for something cosmetic? I'm sorry, I'll keep the sagging boobs, extra skin on my stomach, and wrinkles. I feel bad because it just seems like such a senseless way to die.

that's horrible. I guess it can happen in any surgery. The odds are low though.
You have to really be miserable to have cosmetic surgery, and that's when you make those decisions.

There is always a risk with any surgery. But why put yourself at risk with something elective? You're right - you must have to really be miserable with yourself.

There is a risk with any surgery. I've never had (and don't really plan on ever having) cosmetic surgery, HOWEVER, there are more legitimate reasons to have the surgery -- burn victims, skin cancer removal on your face, reconstruction on your face or body after a major accident. I'd never fault anyone for electing for those types of plastic surgery.
It's not always about boobies and lipo.

I agree - I was talking more about the typical Hollywood kind of plastic surgrey.

I completely disagree with this. Granted, it's more invasive than most ways to make yourself look prettier, but its based on the same reasoning that people get veneers, highlights, or even just wear make-up.. because it makes them feel more attractive. I really don't consider misery to play a role here, imo.

I have not had any plastic surgery, but several of my close friends have. I think saying someone needs to be 'miserable' to have surgery is pretty harsh. After having children when things are all moved around one may elect to have surgery to feel BETTER, but that doesn't mean they were miserable before, KWIM?

Re: This is exactly why I will never have plastic surgery!
stories like this don't sway me away from having it
alot of times there are other circumstances- like age and smoking that play a big factor
if I need it- i am still getting it
and I will wait to here all the facts first

That's a tremendous generalization! I think lots of people have surgery as a way to correct a physical characteristic that really bothers them, this does not mean they are miserable people. I love life and am about as happy a person as a person can be, but I already know I'll be signing up for a tummy tuck after I have kids.

Re: This is exactly why I will never have plastic surgery!
Alright, maybe miserable was the wrong choice of word. Maybe having low self-esteem with describe it better?
I am not happy with a lot of things about my body after having 4 kids. But I would never put myself at that risk just to have the pouch of skin on my stomach or my boobs that are half the size they used to be fixed. My self-esteem isn't exactly grand either. But I would never take the risk to have surgery if I didn't absolutley have to. I have too much at risk to be that selfish and vain. Maybe if I didn't have children I would feel differently.

I don't think all those who have cosmetic surgery have low self esteem. Again, another generalization.
You just have to look at the numbers/stats to see what the risk is. As others have stated, there's risk with every surgery, especially when anesthesia is used.
Who knows, maybe his mom had some kind of medical condition that she was unaware of. It happens and it's not always related to cosmetic surgery.

I understand your reasoning for being against it, however, i really don't understand why people are making such generalizations here about people that would consider (or have) plastic surgery. I don't udnerstand what grounds there is for saying that they are miserable or have low self esteem, but i think its pretty ignorant to assume either.

Re: This is exactly why I will never have plastic surgery!
Personally, I would never ... and I mean never ... have plastic surgery of any kind. Yes, I can understand burn victims, etc. doing it ... but ... not just for superficial reasons. I believe with 4forMe that you have to be feeling very low about yourself or have low self esteem to want to do this. I think part of life ... and being happy in life ... is accepting yourself the way you are and just growing older gracefully. I would never want to look 30 when I'm 70 ... to me it's just plain silly. I have a grandmother who has had a number of procedures done and she's 80 now ... she's saggy and just looks awful. I think she would have looked a lot better at her age now if she just let nature takes it course ... my opinion ...

I was miserable. It affected my quality of life and my self esteem. My surgery was life changing and I would do it again in a heartbeat.
Life is a serious of risks..some have a higher tolerance for it.

Re: This is exactly why I will never have plastic surgery!
It's not for everyone. For me it was worth the risk and I would risk it again. It helped me tremendously.
It wasn't a vanity issue. If you have something about you that makes you cringe when you look in the mirror then you will be able to understand why people do it.
An otherwise healthy person has a very low risk of complications.

Speaking as someone who has had elective plastic surgery I can assure you that I was not miserable nor did I have low self asteem. I didn't care for my breast size and there was something I could do about it. So, I took the option that was available to me. Plain and simple. IMO, I could die on an operating table getting an unheeded surgery, getting on a plane taking an unecassary trip, walking to the store to get that pint of ice cream that I want but don't need etc. Life is about what risks each individual is willing to take. Just because you wouldn't take that risk and others do doesn't mean that they are miserable.

well said! I couldn't agree more
to each his own- but if I am unhappy about something and I can fix it- I am going to do it-
millions of people get comestic surgey - and very few die- the odds are very low

Exactly why I would never have surgery not considered "necessary". I even succesfully had a VBAC to avoid a repeat c-section I did not want to have.
So sad

I agree. My sister had her boobs done and she wasn't "miserable" before. She just wanted them. People get plastic surgery all of the time and the risks are low. There's higher instances of people dieing in car crashes than dieing from plastic surgery. Yet we all continue to drive knowing the risks.

I agree...everything we do has risks...people know smoking causes cancer...they still smoke...drinking can lead to liver disease...we still drink. When you go in to have surgery you are told about all the risks and the complications, which could lead to death.

I knew there was more to this story...Thanks GossipQueen
Donda West Warned About Surgery
TMZ has learned that just weeks before Donda West died, a plastic surgeon refused to perform procedures on her because of a health condition that could have led to a heart attack.
We've learned Dr. Andre Aboolian was set to perform a tummy tuck and breast reduction on Ms. West, but told her she need to get clearance from an internist whom Dr. Aboolian recommended. We're told West never went to that doctor, but subsequently had the procedures performed -- not by Dr. Aboolian.
