This is too scary- Link to blog about 5 year old found outside of school

I follow the blog Momaical. It's usually a humor blog- but today it was serious.

The author went to pick up her kindegartener from school and arrived early to find her 5 year old outside the school right near the road.

She was assigned to help another child get to the nurse. They got lost and wandered around and found themselves outside.

The school's answer was "We send them in pairs. That's how we've always done it."

Is this the norm in elementary schools?! This day and age I don't think ANY elementary aged kids should be allowed of the classroom without adult supervision.

Thoughts?

I'm a teacher and this is insane! I mean, we have the same buddy policy- nobody is ever in the hallway alone. It is impossible to have an adult with them every time someone is sent to the nurse. I don't have a para/assistant etc. BUT all doors are locked and/or someone is sitting near all doors so this couldn't happen. This is crazy.

This is the norm at DS's current school and part of the reason we are putting him in private school next year. Makes me SO MAD.

I know they do the buddy system when going to the nurse, picking stuff up from the office so that part doesn't bother me but why were the doors open for those kids to get out, where were the security guards, why didn't the teacher notice they were missing. Thank god the child was not hurt but I would be livid!!!

Buddy system is the norm. Schools cannot lock doors so kids can't get out. They should have an adult monitoring to make sure these kids do not leave the school.

I let my students walk to the bathroom in buddies, but I stand in the door and watch them go down the hall, and if they take longer than 3 minutes, I call and have someone watch my class and go get them. If I send anyone to the office, I call the office ahead of time to tell them to expect them. Not to mention, all of the doors are secured. I would freak out if it was my kid.

Ds school also had the buddy policy in k for going out of the classroom. But the school doors are always locked. I would be livid if my Ds found his way out of the school.

Inexcusable, however, you can't lock the doors from the inside. Those of you with schools that do, what's the protocol for a fire?

We have a red fire thing at the top of the doors that opens them in case of a fire. Even the doors that have a regular bar, its labeled emergency and would cause the alarm to go off.

I worry about something like this happening to DD when she starts Kindergarten next year. I worry about her getting off the school bus and somehow not making it into the school and no one realizing it.

This story sends my anxiety sky high.

You took the words right out of my mouth. I already have palpitations about sending them on a bus! Luckily I have until 2014. But this is unacceptable. Why are they able to leave the building??!

I don't think there is anything wrong with having buddy pairs walk someone to the nurse INSIDE the school.

If it was a situation o the playground, an adult should have to walk to them to the door of the school.

Also all school doors should have a camera that is montiored or a guard IMO.

I would tell her to start cc'ing the Superintendent of the school district. As a former teacher, I'm sure she knows what will happen & how fast things get done.

Also by EMAILING, there is now a record that the school's lax policies over children wandering caused a potentially dangerous situation. It may prompt them to do something about it or at minimum if a child does go missing due to their negligence, prompt them to do something about it after the huge lawsuit brings up evidence of her email.
