This really annoyed me... WW Product Related

So, I am reading Skinny B!tch-- I know people on here have had a problem because it promotes a vegetarian lifestyle, but I am already a vegetarian and was curious to see what this book had to say.

Because of some of the things I have read in the book-- I am trying to make a small effort to cut out some of the chemicals I consume, as well as sugar. I don't eat a lot of sugar per se, but I want to choose products that don't have sugar in them.

Anyway, I don't follow WW, but I eat a lot of their products-- well, mainly their breads.

So, I was looking at the ingredients for WW Wheat Bread- and the second and third ingredients are High Fructose Corn Syrup (sugar on steriods) AND sugar!!!!

W T F Weight Watchers! Chat Icon I also looked at some of their other products while at the store-- and they were pretty similar, with sugar being one of the top 3 ingredients. This doesn't seem right to me AT ALL.

Most diet products are like this - which is why I stopped eating them (and then gained 3 lbs because if it!!).

I have always found weight watchers to have a decent amount of sugar/carbs in their products. It seems to be a trade-off - you're either doing Atkins - no carb but high(er) fat - or low-fat usually goes along with sugar and carbs so it tastes good.

My wife and I have had a lot of success on WW but I'll be the first to say, they don't promote "healthy" eating. It's calories and fat vs. fiber.

We all know that Kashi is better for you than Cocoa Pebbles but would you believe Cocoa Pebbles are less points. Things like that. That's just the way WW is. Expect to lose weight but there are many things that are not very healthy. Almost all of their products contain olestra too.

Well, that is why I eat Kashi, and I don't eat Cocoa Pebbles!

I am a calorie counter-- BUT, I want to make sure that every calorie I eat is packed with nutritional value. I want them all to count. The WW bread is low in calorie, but high in fiber and protein-- which is why I use their bread products. Their pitas are ok-- but their bagels have a similar ingredient list to the bread.

It just bothers me that WW products are laden with the stuff you should be having less of. I think need to find another good light bread--

I like the bread aisle @ Trader Joe's - I go w/ my cousin, the dietician and she reads 10,000 labels and throws the 'right' one in the basket for me. - Always fresh and yummy !! =)

They have a really good whole wheat -
And if you like the bread w/ the little nutty pieces and seeds in it (which I can't stand) that is the one she always buys for herself.

I don't do WW, but I follow a low carb lifestyle....

All those products are like that...I used to eat the low carb bars until I realized they were full of CRAP!!! Chat Icon

Now I try to stick to whole, natural foods!

that's the plan-- unfortunately, they tend to have higher amounts of calories.

If I can change one or two items-- I think I will be ok.

I eat *pretty* naturally-- I just want to pay more attention to ingredients... I already always look at nutrionals-- man, it's going to take me so long to go food shopping now!

i have to say that i have been trying to eat more naturally too and it's HARD!!

first off, most of it is pricey, but also, so many items have things like high fructose corn syrup and tons of sugars.

i don't really eat WW items, but i've found this to be true to many brands. it's frustrating!!

I am sure that WW does not stand alone in this-- I just feel, as a company, that they should make more of an effort to promote healthy ingedients in their products-- a little more truth in advertising.

I work in advertising-- and I actually sat in a meeting with people from Frito Lay and we were talking about ways to market Sun Chips as a healthy snack??? Yes, its healthier than other snacks out there-- the idea was to choose Sun Chips over a cracker-- because crackers are perceived to be healthier, but in reality they are not. So,in essence, the message was- don't deny yourself the Sun Chips.

I will give Lays a break-- they have like 4 ingredients in their potato chips-- and those are ALL NATURAL. Also, the potatoes go from farm to bag in 4 days. That still does make it healthy to eat a whole bag though. I think the ingredients in sun chips are all natural as well.

All food companies are not bad.

My best friend is on WW and has great success..she just lost about 25lbs. Well she also will eat things with loads of sugar instead of granola which is all natural no added sugar but more calories and fat.

She is also very pound conscious...which i understand. But she refuses to work out, because she gets hungrier and has to eat more and doesn't see the needle on the scale move as much. Chat Icon

I get the idea but it just doesn't make sense. So great she lost 25lbs...but she is eating artificial crap with loads of sugar and not working out??????

With that said...we are about the same height and I probably right now weigh more than her by a few pounds but workout out 5 days a week and eat for the most part natural foods...very balanced.

Re: This really annoyed me... WW Product Related

Sorry to hijack but I feel this needs to be said.

I do agree with the posters that say we should all be trying to eat things more natural and have every calorie count so to speak. I have learned over the past couple of years that eating things less processed and closest to their natural form is the best thing for me personally.

What I don't agree with is that ww does not promote healthy eating. This is simply not true. Along with their point system they also have healthy 8 guidelines that should be followed:

1. Eat at least five servings of vegetables and fruits each day.
2. Choose whole-grain foods, such as brown rice and oats, whenever possible.
3. Include two servings of milk products – low fat (1%) or fat-free – each day.
4. Have some healthy oil (olive oil, canola, sunflower, safflower or flaxseed) each day.
5. Ensure that you are getting enough protein by choosing at least a serving or two of meat, poultry, fish, eggs, or dried beans each day. Many dairy products are also good sources of protein.
6. Limit added sugar and alcohol.
7. Drink at least 6 8-ounce glasses of water a day.
8. Take a multiple vitamin-mineral supplement each day.

Does everyone follow these guidelines?? Absolutely not. However that is a personal decision that people have to make for themselves. I try my best to stick to these guidelines each and every day, however, some people get so caught up in the point system they forget these even exist.

That being said, ww is a corporation. They are in the business of helping people lose weight because it means $$$$$$$ That means that a lot of their products aren't the best nutritionally, however a lot of them do help people stay on program because it's something they can live with.

Azad-- you are right... I think why WW is successful is because people don't need to deny themselves of a treat every now and then-- they can just spend their points in a different way. And everything in moderation is ok.

Basically, the point of the post was that they should just watch their ingredients on some of their products. I believe it's a misrepresentation of their brand.

Chat Icon now i have been on weight watchers 3 times in the past- didnt work for me- i followed the Points plan and ate alot of crappy foods...The points program promotes frozen dinners loaded in sodium, Progesso soups loaded in sodium...

BUT- this past time that I joined with my mom we BOTH do the core plan and in 10 months have both lost over 50 lbs... the Core plan is the way people SHOULD be eating on either plan... You eat in moderation lean meats, fruits, veggies, and whole grain products, you dont count them because they are the designated healthy food...then there are a small amount of points for the week for things not on the plan. I feel SOOO much healthier now, and my mom had high blood pressure 200 over something which dropped to 114 over something..

That's why I avoid these kind of products... instead, I bake most of my own goods, like breads, cookies, muffins. That way I make sure everything I make has lots of fiber (whole wheat flour) and very little sugar. Instead, I substitute with honey, applesauce and bananas.

Actually, what people think is that still eating junk, just eating less of it is healthy. Sure, eat less and you will lose weight, but it's not healthy.

Unfortunately, not all people learn to make healthy choice, or WANT to for that matter, but they do want to lose weight. WW brand foods are definately the lesser of the evil.

I am on WW, but don't really eat their foods. I wil lhave their whole wheat pita or whole wheat english muffin. That's about it. All other food choices are my own. People just need to look at the ingredients and think wisely.

Re: This really annoyed me... WW Product Related

Just about ANY processed food is going to have lots of sugar and sodium. I have ahd success with WW, but I cooked a lot of my own food.

The Points plan can work if you eat pizza and chocolate, and it can work eating fresh fruits and veggies. It's a very loose kind of plan. I think it works, but it's up to people to be adult and make healthy eating choices.

if you have 20 points in a day you can use it to eat

A bowl of high fiber cereal
an apple
a salad with tofu or chicken and light dressing
a cut up red pepper and some hummus
a bowl of homemade WW penne vodka w/ whole wheat pasta and big serving of greens
low fat ice cream or frozen yogurt

OR

2 slices of pizza and a beer.

I personally would rather have #1 and be able to eat 3 meals, snacks and desserts. but sometimes you cna eat unhealthy things. Lucky Charms are 2 points while Fiber one is 3 points, but I choose fiber one because I *know* it's healthier. You have to use your brain!

Seriously, When I did the CORE program you could not eat any of the WW snacks or breads unless you counted it in your flex points for the week. I thought that was strange.
