We have a house up further in Maine & I can tell you if you stay on the coastal areas, especially in the summer months, you will always find things to do.
Check out these towns: Old Orchard: amusement parks, lighthouses, museums, nature walks
Freeport: Outlet shopping
Kittery, Kennebunkport, Ogunquit
Here is a website with all attractions in southern Maine Southern Maine Attractions
I am not sure what would be better in terms of an RV or a Van. Do you guys plan on staying in hotels or camping???

I go to Northern NH each summer (I have a friend who lives up there).
Being that you are only going to be in NH for a day - it's a lot of driving to just go to Storyland - if the only child travelling with you is an 18 month old IMO. If you want to spend another day in NH before you make the trip - it may be worth it You can take a Gondola ride up Wildcat Mountain, climb Mount Washington, shop in North Conway (similar stores though to the ones in Maine) and there are a few more small amusement parks. There's also the North Conway Scenic Railroad (haven't ever done it but, it seems to be quite popular).

thanks for pointing that out. we're probably going to scrate NH. storyland is . it's $25 per person. i guess i'll find other things cheaper to fill the days
