Those familiar with installing crown moulding...
I want to get an idea of how much you think crown moulding would be or if you've had someone install it for you what was your quote and what was included?
We got a quote today from a friend of a friend who says he is giving us a HUGE discount.
We'd need about 375 feet of crown moulding.
How much do you think for materials, labor, painting it white, caulking, etc (basically everything)?
ETA: The rooms we're doing are LR, DR, Kitchen, Hallway, Office, Foyer, Master bedroom.

Re: Those familiar with installing crown moulding...
It really depends. It is wood vs composite material (the slighly bendable one)?
How ornate do you want it?
Prices vary a lot on crown molding.

material-all depends on the amount of crown you order.. and the size I would persoally buy the material myself since they will mark it up. it IS their business..
it comes often times primed if you get MDF so you dont need it primed just painted and I am sure you can do that yourself..
Installing molding is anywhere from 50.00 per hr to 105.00 per hr...
and if you want a design ect....
I would have a painter PAINT it and a carpenter install it...
this is an art in my opinion.. if you see the pix in my profile you will understand.. if I paid someoen to do all that work it would be 100k in labor alone good luck mammaaaaa

Re: Those familiar with installing crown moulding...
Thanks!! DH was saying something about how it's not wood (it's not foam either) but looks like wood. He showed DH tons of pics of his previous work and this guy has been recommended to us already by two friends (and he is a friend of a friend) so we know he'll do a great job.
I'll post my estimate that he gave us, but I wanted to get some ideas of what you guys thought that would cost us.

Re: Those familiar with installing crown moulding...
We were originally going to do it ourselves. We've done everything else in the house (installed flooring, painted, will install the kitchen, etc) but DH thought with all the cuts we need and the very high ceilings in the foyer it would be great to hire someone out.
Do you think $1,800 is a fair quote for what we need?
It's 6" crown moulding and they'll be putting up 375 feet. There are a lot of angled walls in our home also.

Re: Those familiar with installing crown moulding...
That seems a bit high to me unless that includes them buying the material for you. We redid all the crown and base moulding throughout our house. We bought primed white MDF and hired a contractor since we have no idea how to put up moulding. I think we paid about $1300 for all of that to be put in plus 7 new doors as well. I think all the moulding cost us around $500 - $600 but I'd have to look at the receipt.

Re: Those familiar with installing crown moulding...
Yes, that includes materials, painting wood, installation/labor, caulking, cleaning up and it also includes them putting crown in one of our tray ceilings and doing our foyer which has an extremely high 2-story ceiling (higher than a ladder goes).

Wow... this is why I am glad I can usually just call a handyman to come in and work at $150-175 a day. I very rarely get jobs quoted per job anymore because of this (unless its a really specialized job).
I can have a guy come in at $175 for an eight hour day and bang this out. Even if it takes him a few days to do the job, it would have to take him TEN days for me to break even at paying somebody a flat $1,800 fee. No way that job takes 10 days. Probably can do it in under 5 days.

There are plenty of willing handymen on craigslist that need work due to the slow economy and rising costs of gas and stuff.
Many of them are very grateful for the work and always look for references.
If I need work done, I usually post the job out in the "gigs" section on craigslist. I typically get tons of emails per job so I have plenty of people to choose from.

Ave1024... Have you hired someone like that do come and install crown and base moulding?
I feel like this IS a specialized job and is work for someone skilled with lots of experience. We've heard horror stories about crown moulding being installed incorrectly and cracking, splitting, falling down, etc. We have very weird angled walls and high ceilings and even though DH is extremely handy he wanted to hire out for this.
So for a guy for 3-5 days off craigslist that's $525-$875 plus about $800-$1,000 for all the crown moulding. I can go with this reputable company for that much.

Hmmmm... I just noticed your quote included the materials. Then maybe it's not that bad of a deal because I know crown moulding isn't cheap.
But to answer you question, I have been incredibly surprised by the quality of work I have had done in my house by various people I have hired over the years by people I have hired.

Yea it's not cheap, we already looked at HD and Lowes for the moulding we want (6") and it would be b/w $800-$1,000 plus tax.
That's really great though, i'm sure you've saved a ton of $$ by hiring those people!

Re: Those familiar with installing crown moulding...
I am not familar with the quote but I would definitely say its one of those jobs that it might be better off having someone do.
DH has installed floors, and done great jobs on everything else. We didn't even do crown molding, just floor molding and he did the best he could.... it's a hard job!

That sounds like a pretty good deal to me, especially if they're going to paint it too.

Re: Those familiar with installing crown moulding...
I think that's a very fair price especially if he includes the materials. DH is in the business and he did all of our mouldings- it probably cost us that much just for our materials!(With DH's contractor discount!) It's a very painstaking job- let someone else do it! Esp since you two have been working so hard on everything else! Take a break!
