Question for those with crown moulding and cold basementss:

As your house settles - do you get gaps/cracks/separation between where the ceiling is and the top of the molding - it's not even 1 year and in certain areas the mouldng is cracking away from the ceiling. Kind of annoying - is this normal?

Also, if your basement has no heat - and you have relatively new wood floors on your 1st floor - is it normal to see spaces between each piece in the winter. I'm hoping the floors expand back to their original width once it gets warmer.

thanks!!

Yes and yes.

You can caulk around the moulding to fill in the gaps.

Wood floors naturally expand and contract with the seaons. That's why when they are installed there is a gap left between the floor and the wall. Moulding is put over it so you don't see the gap and much of the expansion and contraction takes place there.

Thanks for posting this about the wood floors! I had no idea about this!!!!

I was getting annoyed in a couple of spots because I could see the gaps - but now I understand why they are there!

I noticed this on the molding we have on the floor in our basement. It seems to be separating from the wall.
