those of you in areas where homes were NOT affected by sandy
have you gone to the areas badly affected to see the devastation for yourself / donate / help friends? Do you feel the news / media has done justice to portray what is going on?
Just got back from LB donating items and it was my first time traveling that far south...it was absolutely heart breaking! DH & I were silent on the way home. I really think the media doesn't even come close.

Physically have not gone bc I am very pregnant with twins
But have been part of a group organizing drop offs to rockaway breezy and broad channel We collected many items and have dropped off to people
Dh has been down there cleaning up since the storm and the first night he came home he said to me tv does not do the same effect
He said as bad as it looks on tv seeing iti in person was a million times worse
He has been actually dropping stuff off in broad channel for me for friends of friends
He also said the people were amazing, actually in god spirits considering what they had. Been thorough

Not even close. Long beach and island park are beyond devastated. Parts of east rockaway and Oceanside also.
I feel like the news has ignored long island completely and aid seems to be really slow getting here.

Re: those of you in areas where homes were NOT affected by sandy
I completely agree with you. The media has shown so little. When you drive to your home, and see cardboard signs advertising where you can get food, or see the national guard parked outside the elementary school, and see tons of furniture and cherished belongings laying in front of homes, it's just really hard to handle. When you speak to neighbors telling you you can hangout at their home by the fireplace for heat, it just takes you to a different time.
It's disheartening because I just feel with all the ways to communicate these days we still have no idea of what's going on.
ETA...I have seen almost no follow up on Breezy Point. I lost things to a flood which imo does not compare to what those people lost.

Re: those of you in areas where homes were NOT affected by sandy
my husband has been taking the car to work everyday and between that and the gas shortage we hadn't gone out...we donated 3 bags a week ago but hadn't actually gone...but today i said "enough...this is happening in our backyard...we need to see it for ourselves. There's no reason to be so far removed...let's go. we put some donations in the car and along the way in LB we found a parking lot where they were offering free food and clothing donations. We stopped to drop off our stuff and to see people rumagging through garbage bags looking for clothes and all the national guard vehicles...EVERY street just full of trash and cleared out belongings...it's so so awful.

yes! businesses and residents alike...they have turned their garages into walk in free supply warehouses with water and other items...they are holding signs that say "free food, free clothes and free hugs". On one hand its so sad to see the devastation...but on the other it warms the heart to see that not everyone has lost their heart...there are still many good hearted people out there.

Re: those of you in areas where homes were NOT affected by sandy
I have not gone. I want to volunteer but child care and my husbands schedule makes it hard. BUT to be honest, i'm hesitant to go. Just not sure my heart can take it.
I have donated a ton. Some things that i had and then i went and bought a lot of things to donate.
I haven't watched the news at all about it. We just got power back a few days ago. And usually i stay away from the news and all sad stories.

Yes went to the Rockaway Beach area. Definitely devastation, words cannot state what it looks like. Pictures either.

Yes, we went to Lindenhurst on Monday to check out my cousins former house. The entire neighborhood looked like a movie scene. Such devastation, it's heartbreaking.

I haven't gone but dh went to Breezy Point to help last week after being relocated there for work the night before (fdny) and seeing the devastation first hand. Today he went to Lindenhurst.
Since the boys are in daycare full time and I am going to be working from home more, hes aiming to get out there once a week.

I live in an area of Brooklyn that was relatively untouched (not even power loss) and went to Rockaway to help my aunt. I've seen a lot of horrible images on the news, but there's something about seeing it for yourself that makes it feel that much more real.

Nope. DH and I haven't gone to any of the areas yet and we only live 20 min away in Malverne. We should.
I dropped off clothes and water to RVC archdiocese and dropped donation stuff off and volunteered at Mitchell field with the animals today.
I think we're going to donate blood tomorrow or Monday in RVC.

my friends and family are all from Long Beach, Oceanside and Island Park. i grew up in Long Beach. the devastation is just beyond what I can even understand. i feel so helpless. we had 5 people including my cousins 13m old son here during the storm and for several days after. i helped my mom clean our her place..we threw out my DDs pack-n-play, my high school graduation photos...it was sad. one of my friends is actually homeless now. another relocated to florida until her home is gutted and completely renovated.
i am very broke right now and i feel so helpless and i cant donate more. with an 18m old baby and the gas situation its difficult for me to get out and volunteer. i donated diapers that my DD grew out of, an infant seat and baby clothes. i was driving through Long Beach to go donate at the main site and I just stopped in the middle of Beech St and gave my items to people on the street cause that's how badly they needed them (this was last weekend).
i just feel so helpless. seeing the city I love literally ravaged was just so sad and unbelievable.

Yes because we feel fortunate to have been minimally affected my husband and I have tried to help out when we can...it is absolutely awful out there.
And NO I don't think the media is really covering this in general and definitely not Long Island. I have Facebook friends from across the country who have said things like, "Hope things are back to normal after Sandy," which just shows how little they know about what is happening.

Honestly I'd rather not see images constantly on tv and I'm glad in a way that they don't show it. It's heartbreaking and makes me depressed. Im better off in some ways not knowing. I think its too much to take.
I am actually volunteering next weekend in either LB or Lindenhurst. I'm actually getting anxiety about what I will see.

those of you in areas where homes were NOT affected by sandy
When I go out to unaffected places I feel like a zombie. I wonder if people know that in one tide cycle I lost my entire past and present. With one historical storm track, every sacrifice my parents have made since 1966 is being tossed out to the curb, covered with mold or warped beyond recognition. I think that everyone should go....just to see what was ripped away from us, pay respect to the homes we lost, a moment of silence to the memories we had to drain sewage out of. Think about the fact that I won't live in my house for months. I see my husband once a week. My daughter cries for her daddy every night. She asks to go home and we don't know if we can afford to make it safe for her again. I hope everyone goes and sees what happened and how we are handling it, united as entire neighborhoods work together to rebuild our hometown.

While I was one affected I am glad that people are getting out and seeing it for themselves. Whenever I leave south Nassau I get a pit at the bottom of my stomach because I enter a world unaffected and those whom I meet seem to have no clue the extent of what has happenned. People ask me if i got my power back and I tell them my damage and it's like "oh just a flooded basement" and act like its nothing when I explain that most of my community lost everything and I was the lucky one. It's hard to understand it until you see it.
I feel similarly. We fortunately just lost the contents of our entire basement.
Every day I feel like I meet someone I know who either lost their house completely, or will be displaced until the spring----if they are lucky----given the fact that it's almost winter and construction never is finished when you expect (for the most part).
The day after the storm, I went to work, and a couple of my colleagues live in areas such as Central Brooklyn or North of Sunrise where their lights just flickered during the storm.
While some are 1000% sympathetic, it's hard to not want to punch the morons in the face who are complaining about being without power for a few days, when their co-worker who lives by the water in S. Lindenhurst has not been seen or heard from since the storm happened.

I think many Long Islanders are in the same boat, wanting to help, but not knowing what they can do.
I personally feel really sad for many because I know how hard it is to make it here on a normal day.
I think this storm is going to put many more people in the poor house.

I haven't gone yet, but my husband was handing out supplies in Island Park this week and was very humbled. He echoed many sentiments from this thread about just how devastating the losses are.

Re: those of you in areas where homes were NOT affected by sandy
I haven't gone. As much as I want to go, I don't. Same reason I never went to Ground Zero. I don't want to drive by, gawking at the devastation in people's lives.
I've seen the photos, the videos & donated. I don't know how I'd feel with my whole life scattered throughout the neighborhood or at the curb & see people driving by to check out THE devastation which would actually be MY devastation. I think some people would feel like their destroyed belongings would be like a Christmas display & the last thing I'd want is to make them feel worse.
My husband has been working with no days off in downtown Manhattan, restoring the electric in the buildings that were flooded, so I have the kids. I won't go because the only way I could is if I went with work gloves & supplies so I could stop & help people with the clean up.

Re: those of you in areas where homes were NOT affected by sandy
I drove down to my old neighborhood in south seaford and to bring soup to my friends in South Bellmore. It is awful. I can't even imagine what Long Beach is like. I have a 3 year old so once the day care opened I spent the morning feeding people with the red cross. I tried to go back for dinner but, DS was running all over. I spent the rest of the night with him strapped into a carseat delivering food house by house in one area. It's just awful. I think the media is doing the best they can but, it's just insane. I think the areas that are not Long Beach and the Rockaways are not getting press either. And LB and the Rockaways are also not getting enough press. I have pepole down south asking where they can donate but, I don't even know what to thell them. They want to do something other than the red cross. But, where?
I donated clothes and money but, I don't know what else I can do. I wish there was something I could find to do with DS in tow. He is really sensitive and affected by this so I won't take him to LB. He has been asking really sad questions about if his house is going to be blown away and if I am going to leave him. So I have to protect him too.
