Spinoff to Gas: To the Out of state, non-sandy affected areas... gas prices?

Dropping like a stone in water?

My gosh!!!! I get gas thinking it can get any better than that. But now its down to $3.05 Chat Icon I put gas in at $3.19 thinking it was a STEAL.

Now I hear prices have dropped under $3 in some parts of town. The lowest you can find it is the whole group of walmart stations and its $2.95.

I heard on the radio it is directly due to the effects of Sandy. That there's not enough demand in the NE so the prices are dropping.

So for the non-sandy affected states. Are you seeing the same?

Really? People are standing in lines here waiting for gas for hours.

Please keep this wonderful news to yourself. This is deeply insensitive to those in this area.

Re: Spinoff to Gas: To the Out of state, non-sandy affected areas... gas prices?

My confusion is this- how are they saying there is not enough demand here in the NE- when there are lines of cars for hours to get gas?
I would say the demand is pretty high, no?

Not enough demand in the NE??? Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Well, if that were true then there wouldn't be lines hours long everywhere on the island right now.

As for the prices, you're lucky. Right before the hurricane I was paying about $3.67/gallon and since the gas craziness here it's gone UP every day since. Yesterday I saw $4.10/gallon. Ridiculous.

Looking forward to things getting back to normal around here.

This is a long island website, who cares what you are paying for gas. I'm puzzled by this post

I wish I could ship it to you Chat Icon

I have been asking about sending medical stuff since I assume that's being short lately to my family for any of their friends or family.

Our churches (and mind you I dont go to church) and local charities are all filling up with stuff.

Wish we could do more.

The only thing I can think of is that since stations couldn't get and pump gas, sales were down.
They were selling less than normal since many were closed, without power, without deliveries.
That could be why

Actually, I think it is sort of interesting form an economic standpoint.

I think that it's not that there isn't demand from drivers in the NE, but since many stations are closed due to power problems, they aren't selling gas, and therefore, not taking new deliveries, so there isn't demand from those retailers to the distributers.

And there there is the problem of not being able to deliver to some areas in the NE, even if the stations are open, so the distributors do have an excess.

I wonder if when we have fully functioning stations in this area will local & national prices increase, because of increased demand in this area.

It is very difficult for people in this area right now and I am hopign we are back to naormal very soon, but I know in other areas of the country, with no mass transit and fewer economic opportunites, the gas prices have been an issue for a while, so this could be a much needed break for some people right now.

That makes sense. Sounds like the only viable explanation because as far as us LI'ers are concerned, there is surely a demand! Chat Icon

Here's an idea:

Donate all that extra money that you would be spending on gas to helping people who have lost their homes, businesses, and loved ones.

How is your heat, hot water, and electricity? I bet those things are great too! Good for you!! You win!

This post is really not necessary nor is it even a conversation starter as the vast majority of people on this website are in LI, NJ, etc.

I agree. This may be good news in terms of prices once gas stations start to reopen in the tri-state area.

We are all pissed off about the gas situation in NY. I get the point of the post, and I really am happy that you're getting a good deal on gas, but celebrate on the inside.

THAT is a great idea. Most out here feel like OK great gas is cheap.. how do you put gas in your car knowing others have no heat. Chat Icon

We can't donate more than we have so what can we do? well how about we just send gas cards?!?!

THERE's a care package that can be used! Its cheap and easy to send (as in shipping!)

And yeah, I would HOPE that prices up there are lower NOW as much as they can be and should be lower when you're in full swing too.

I don't know if that really helps right now with so many station closed or out of gas.

ITA. Some of us worry whether we will be able to go get groceries, get to work, and even if our tank will make it on a line long enough to get to the pump.

on a side note...I unfortunately do not know if this will impact us NYC'ers once gas is readily available...i have already seen such a huge gas hike in the past 2-3 days I can only imagine they keep the price high for a bit longer

Forgetting the stations that were on the news in elmont for charging $5.99 a gallon with a line for miles just because people are desperate for gas...but the station i managed to fill up at friday morning was only $3.89 at the time...when i passed it by today (although they had no gas but i assume got a delivery between now and then)...it was up to $4.02

I agree - I wasn't offended by this post at all...........if the crazy high gas prices are dropping for anyone in America, I'm happy for them.

Sure, I wish gas were easily available but I think this is more of an economical inquiry.

The gas station by me is charging $4.79 a gallon and you have to wait 3-4 hours for it, or stand on a line with a gas can for 45 minutes, count your lucky stars you in paying what you are payint
