Those of you who DON'T qualify for the rebate...
How do you tactfully say this when people ask if you've gotten your check yet?
If you say you don't qualify you are basically telling them what you make per year. It kind of feels like bragging then.
I don't want to lie to people and tell them we got it or are waiting.
What are you saying if/when it comes up?
ETA: None of your business, fool. Doesn't seem quite right either.

We haven't gotten many questions about it, but we usually just say we don't qualify and leave it at that.
ETA: I don't feel like my husband or I are bragging either.

just to give you another side to it, I know 3 people that aren't getting the rebate because they owe back taxes...soooo...people might not assume that you make too much, lol!

I don't know of anyone who would ever ask that question. I would never think to...
But I guess if I didn't qualify...and someone rudely asked...i'd say "oh, we're not getting one" and leave it at that. I wouldn't think twice. If they then ask "oh why aren't you getting one??" simply say "oh we choose not to pay our taxes, therefore no rebate for us!!" or something similarly smart azz!

I don't even know if we qualify because I haven't looked at the guidelines or last year's tax return.

"Looks like we'll be waiting forever for one. How long is it supposed to take?"
"A few hundred dollars is getting eaten up by gas prices anyway."
Most of the time, I think people make small talk but don't realize they're delving into personal finances. None of the above answer the question but can move on to a different topic.

I think I'd just give an innocuous response like "I can't even be excited with the increase in gas prices these days!"
I agree with a PP that said they are probably just trying to make small talk...Give a simple answer and they won't ask anything further.

Same here...anyone that has brought it up, hasn't pressed further.
It's pretty tacky for anyone to even ask,let alone push further with comments such as "I don't feel bad for you", etc.

if you make over $175,000 combined (both spouses), you don't get one.

From the IRS website:
Phase Out: The stimulus payment –– both the basic component and the additional funds for qualifying children –– begins to phase out for individuals with adjusted gross incomes (AGI) over $75,000 and married couples who file a joint return with AGI over $150,000. The combined payment is reduced by 5 percent of the income above the AGI thresholds.

The minute that person said "why" I'd have asked "Why do you want to know." That usually ends it.
To answer the OP's question, I just say "We're not getting one." If they ask any more questions, I say, "why do you want to know?" If they say they're curious, I just say it's private. I don't discuss my finances with anyone.
