Not that I agree with the practice but...it worked! You looked. You read the sign. A moving sign on a person will grab a passerby's attention moreso than a sign stapled to a pole. Advertising!

I always feel bad for the human billboard people, but I guess they don't mind it if they apply for the job.

I don't see anything wrong with them other than I feel bad for them (weather conditions, etc.). If it pays the bills, who are we to judge? It seems easy enough.

But WHY do stores even need people to do this? Thats what always gets me...

Cheap advertising/marketing. Look how well the practice works; we're having a discussion about it on LIFChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Seriously though, for those who might be mentally challenged, etc., it seems like a fair enough job. It's definitely along the lines of "cart boy" status thoughChat Icon

Know what breaks my heart? I worry all the time that one day I will see one of my wonderful, beautiful, amazing students holding a sign like that because they will never be given a chance to do anthing else in their lives.... Chat Icon

I wouldn't look too deeply into that thoughChat Icon The people who are employed for these types of positions accept them willingly. I don't think anyone is pressured to do this since it's basically a gravy (not required) type of job for the business that utilizes this marketing approach.

I was a marketing major and more people notice these human signs than any other billboard sign. And, Lipgloss, are you seriously telling me you didn't notice what the sign said? You said yourself, it was "going out of business" which in turn means you did in fact notice the sign as well.

I feel bad for them.

I also feel bad for the poor kid who works at the Subway and has to dress in the sandwhich costume and wave to the traffic driving by on 25A in Wading River... Chat Icon

Poor kid, bad enough they're probably only making minimum wage, now they have to dress up like a sandwhich... I honk everytime I pass him/her. Chat Icon Chat Icon

whether it's a guy holding a sign or a stripper turning tricks in a club - as long as it is a legal job

Re: Those people who wear those signs on the sides of roads...

To add my two cents...
I don't know why I think this, but I think I was told that they "wear" the signs because they CAN'T post them on poles. I think it is considered like littering or graffiti if they post the signs. If the person wears the sign and keeps moving, then it's not a violation of that kind of thing...

Re: Those people who wear those signs on the sides of roads...

I've heard that they actually get paid pretty well.

I've also heard that certain towns have laws about posting signs, and the business can be fined if they put signs on the corner or on a pole, so if they have someone hold or wear a sign instead, they're allowed to stand in a public place.

You know - those people who wear those signs on them that say "Going out of business sale" or whatever big sales that are occurring at a nearby store...

Does anyone else think it is awful? What is the point? Can't the store get a tripod, some duct tape on a pole, anything??? Why do they need to hire someone to stand out in the cold to wear a sign? I think its so degrading... I was on Hempstead tunpike at a red light and saw this middle aged man wearing a sign... his eyes were closed - he looked miserable and freezing, and I was just thinking how pointless it was...

ITA!!!!! I think the same thing

Re: Those people who wear those signs on the sides of roads...

They have tons of people that do that down here to advertise for a new home development opening or something.

Usually it's young kids and they are listening to music and flipping and flinging the sign around!

I'd hate to see them out there though if it were freezing!

Some store was going bankrupt.. no idea which one... the man was shivering and I think smoking a cigarette - or it was just so cold you can see his breath... he was talking to himself and right before the light changed he was closing his eyes....

Re: Those people who wear those signs on the sides of roads...

DH and I were just talking about this yesterday. We were going down Rt. 110 after hitting Costco, Target and Lowe's and there were a bunch of sign holders for Levitz going out of business. At one corner, ther guy was crowched (sp?) down against a telephone pole and he looked miserable. I wondered how much they made. DH said it was cash probably, which is why they do it. I just wondered how they go to the bathroom Chat Icon

Well, the sign IS covering much of their body.... Maybe they just unzip and go while they are standing there? Chat Icon

I agree! I live off of Hempstead Tpke in Levittown & I see those signs everywhere. I really feel so bad for those people.

ETA: I know they choose that job & they probably are there because they need the money, but I still feel bad for anyone who has to stand on a corner in the cold wearing a huge sign.

I hate it. I can't imagine how awful and humiliating it must be to have to stand there and hold a sign. Chat Icon

I know, I always say the same thing to my DH, I feel so bad, I'm sure the pay isn't that great either.
