those who live in Levittown...please share your thoughts

We are most likely purchasing a home in Island trees school district. Please share with me your thoughts and experiences regarding the area.

I grew up in an incorporated village with a school district that is rated very high and it's own police dept....however, we can't afford much of a home in that neighborhood. Or if we could, we would definately need to expand upon it, which...who knows if we would ever really afford either. Some people are asking me why Levittown, when i came from such a strong community. Please give me some thoughts to fire back at them, hehe...

also, can you share with me any parks that are in the area, recreational activities for kids, things like that? I know there is a village green with a bowling alley, which looks cute, anything else? playgrounds, etc? we dont have kids yet, but plan on raising a family there...anything would be appreciated.

Also, any thoughts regarding the power lines running in the back yards would be appreciated. we notice the lines run in the back as opposed to the front of the house. (the home is not near the big towers which i noticed north of hempstead tpk., we are south of the tpke.... just the regular residential lines) THANKS!

I hear Levittown has a great school district and i know you can find a house for a reasonable price...

I grew up in an incorporated village (Floral Park) love it there and would love to find a house but a few things I hate about it....You have to get approval for everythin and the taxes are very high... therefore, I'm lookin elsewhere too (unless I find a great deal)!!

that is good to know, what school do you teach in if you dont mind me asking? you can FM me if you'd like. I heard that island tree lost a lot of $$ in this years budget which i know is true for many schools on the islands b/c of the economy. How is the music program, theater? things like that? I hear sports are pretty good. TIA!

I grew up in Levittown, but went to MacArthur not Island Trees. So I can be little help there.

As for recreation, there are parks in pretty much every area of Levittown. There are also nine pools which you can use from Father's Day until Labor Day with no fee (it is built into your taxes). There is LSA (Levittown Swim Association) which holds swim meets throughout the summer.

St Bernards is very popular for CYO sports like basketball, cheerleading, and swimming.

Levittown has a dance program run out of Gardiner's Ave Elementary School and also has a summer camp program for children in grades 6 and under during July and August from 9am-noon.

ETA: Growing up, I lived just south of Hempstead Turnpike and there were residential power lines as well. The only time it was ever an issue was when my parents installed a pool. They had to change the side of the yard they put it on. In the grand scheme of things, not a big deal.

Re: those who live in Levittown...please share your thoughts

I live on the south side of Levittown in the Mac Arthur salk school district.

Levittown is a great town. The schools are really good. The people that live in Levittown really care about their neighborhood and their neighbors.

I have lived in an incorporated village, I also lived in N bellmore and for the past 3.5 years Danielle and I have lived here. I have to say that this is the best town out of the 3 to live in. We have really great neighbors, there are stores all over the place, free pools, bowling alley's, after school programs for kids, and great schools. When ever anyone says anything about Levittown to me, I just shrug it off because they dont know the truth about this town and we dont need them living here.

The closest pool would probably be Acorn Lane pool which is right next to South Levittown Lanes bowling ally. Unless there is a pool east of Wantagh Ave that I don't know about?

Re: those who live in Levittown...please share your thoughts

I swam competitvely in LSA. It was a wonderful program. I learned lifeguard classes, and all kinds of swimming classes for small fees.
It's a great place for teens to "hang out" in the summer. exercise and being part of team. i loved it. i was stupid when i quit. So.. the pools are awesome.
the library has great programs there for kids and is a great library all together.

There are always things going on during the spring / summer. Parades on holidays down wantagh ave (closer to wantagh).

I am trying my darndest to get back there. trying to be closer to my parents.

I, too, went to macarthur...1991 (gosh i am old).

Re: those who live in Levittown...please share your thoughts

I grew up on Constellation Road, right down the block from the East Village Green. I have to tell you, after talking to people about where they grew up, I was surprised at the differences. I wouldn't have wanted to grow up anywhere else.

There were a TON of families around, lots of kids to play hide and go seek, ringalevio, kick the can, whatever. The pool and park in the summer. The convenient stores so closeby. Being flanked by shopping areas was so convenient. I even volunteered for their ambulance corps for many years.

I went to Island Trees, and I am not a parent or have ever been concerned with budgets myself, so I can't really comment on that. But I do know there were a full suite of activities, the only one I joined was the drama club. I don't know if any other schools had photo labs like we did either. It was a lot of fun. Chat Icon

You should search this board for "Levittown" and see what you come up with. There have been many discussions about the town, both good and bad. It holds a special place in my heart so I wouldn't be any help with negatives, especially the ones from people who have never spent significant time there.

There is no pool on the east side. Acorn is your pool if you are by the bowling alley.

I graduated Mac in 1990- I wonder if I knew you? And my brother graduated in 1992- he was one of those "wall" kids. Chat Icon

I loved growing up in Levittown- I played softball through LAC for many years, was a Brownie and Girl Scout, took dancing on Saturdays at Wisdom Lane (till I accepted that I sucked!). Summer was for swimming lessons and Levittown also has one of the best/nicest public libraries I've ever visited. I almost lived there in the summer too.

We are going to move back to LI and Levittown at some point. I miss it.

DH has lived in Levittown since Middle School. We bought our first home here and really love it. We are off of Gardiners Ave.

There are many parks/pools/activities. Our neighbors are great, and we love the community "feel".

DH is director of the Island Trees Library! Chat Icon

Re: those who live in Levittown...please share your thoughts

I lived in both parts of Levittown. 18 years by the library and 6 years in Island Trees off of Wantagh Avenue. I loved all the little parks they have, the shopping that was walking distance on Hemp TPK, the pools, and the nice restaurants.

I went to Division and found it so so but my sis went to Island Trees High and loved it there. Our neighbors were awesome and loved the block parties every year. In fact I still fly up every July for my MIL's block party (she lives in North Levittown). The community atmosphere is great for families with or without kids. You made a great choice.
