Those with "Special Needs" family or friends...

Do you get offended when people call things "retarted"?

I was in the supermarket and the cashier kept saying everything was "retarted". The prices, the people, etc. Chat Icon

A few years ago, I found out my (then) boss's son had Downs Syndrome, and since then, I always I watch what I say around other people in general. I admit that I used the word in the past, but I am so careful to what I say to people now....

I don't have friends or family who are mentally retarded, but I have worked with children who are. The use of the word "retarded" as an adjective to describe something that someone finds stupid is a pet peeve of mine.

My mom drive a bus with and used to be an aid before driving special needs children. They're amazing children- I've known some of them for 15 years. I do get offended and want to smack people sometimes when I hear it to tell you the truth. I can tell it upsets my mom too when she hears it.

I can't stand the use of that word, I find it to be very offensive. I have several people in my family that could be classified as that & the word alone makes my skin crawl.

I despise that word as well as the kids who call the special education students
SPEDS (they say it in a very condescending manner)

Yes, it bothers me very much. I've actually confronted people who have used that term in my presence. I don't get offended easily, but I have a developmentally disabled family member that lives with me, so this is something that will set me off.

I absolutely cannot stand when people use that word. It makes me angry. I also can't stand when people say "sped" or "special ed."

I guess being a teachers of children with special needs I am quite conscious of people's language when referring to others.

Re: Those with "Special Needs" family or friends...

i HATE when people say something or someone is retarded!!! it is so offensive and cruel.

people who are classified as mentally retarded (of which i have 2 in my family) are human beings who deserve the same respect and dignity as a typical person. using retarded as the name of the diagnosis is acceptable, but to use it as a descriptive word is disgusting.

i've seen people write it on here and i bite my tongue but i get so upset Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Those with "Special Needs" family or friends...

It depends. I'm an SLP and I work with and have worked with so many students with mental retardation, so I can be a bit sensitive to the term; however, I think that it is one of those terms that has become such common slang that people often don't mean it as saying "wow you are just like a person with mental retardation" does that make sense??

I think it's terrible that people use the word in that way, but I don't think they are thinking of what we all think of when we think of someone with mental retardation.

Re: Those with "Special Needs" family or friends...

To be honest- it doesn't bother me- I don't think I even pick up on it...

As far as referring to a "special needs" person as retarded- At one time it was the "politically correct" term

and

If someone referred to something (not someone) as retarded- I don't think it would bother me either...

If it was said in a degrading like "making fun of someone" tone- well then it would bother me-

But the word itself doesn't offend me.

Re: Those with "Special Needs" family or friends...

My brother had special needs when he was younger...I used to throw around that word as a kid and until I truly knew the meaning...Now I would never use that word and I hear adults saying it all the time...makes me nuts!

Me too and I made a thread about this not too long ago after a school psychologist used the word to me, and I was surprised that some people were actually okay with the term.

I wouldnt really say that I get offended. But I definitely think each time that they could of used a better choice of words. My DD has Mosaic Down Syndrome.

Re: Those with "Special Needs" family or friends...

My SIL is mentally retarded and I've worked in the developmental disabilities field for a long time...I know "retarded" is just a word people use loosely (like stupid, idiot, etc) so I don't necessarily get that offended.

Re: Those with "Special Needs" family or friends...

Unfortunately I think the word has drifted away from its originally meaning into a slang form. Same like the word b!tch. I used to be very involved in the dog showing world where that word actually still holds its true meaning and is not thought of negatively. It simply describes the category of the female dog vs dog (male) because they are shown separately. It's crazy and frustrating how words can evolve into having different meanings and usages.

Re: Those with "Special Needs" family or friends...

My brother has williams syndrom (similar to downs). I have used the word and even he has used the word. I don't describe him as mentally retarded, I say he has williams syndrom or he's mentally disabled/challenged. I don't love the word but I am guilty of using it and it doesn't offend me if I hear it.

BUT what does offend me is when people stare at my brother and kids laugh- no word could bring on the anger I get when I see this! I just want to punch them in the face.
