Re: Those with "Special Needs" family or friends...

don't even get me started. my sister has spinabifida (physically disabled, not mentally) but yes, I hate it. I hate people who stare at her and on and on. I think people are more used to seeing people in wheelchairs and not people who walk with a cane or whatever. I hate the word "retarded"....it's gross.
It's always important to be careful of what you say and do. You never know who you might unknowingly offend. I also think when these issues affect you and your family firsthand...your views are different. I hate comments about the small buses, too...because me and my sister took it for convenience since some of the time we were at the same school.

Do you get offended when people call things "retarted"?

No it doesn't bother me, just as I don't get offended when someone refers to something as being "gay".

My aunt has Downs. I do not get "offended" by the use of the word retarded but I do think it's inappropriate and in very, very poor taste.

same here. i honestly feel that people who use those words as slang aren't doing it to offend, just to emphasize their point. i am guilty of using those words - not like i'm proud of it, but i do use them.

My best friends son has down syndrome. He is 2 weeks younger than my own son. I hate the word "retarded". This little boy has overcome so much in his short little life, open heart surgery, testicualr surgery, eye surgery, to hear and see people making fun of developmentally disable people makes my blood boil.

It really upsets me when we go to the mall and people stare at this little 2 year old. He is the most affectionate happy little guy in the world.

DHs son has disabilities and nephew has Downs - to be honest I wouldn't be offended by that.

Ghetto slang bothers me (not offends, but annoys me) a lot more than saying "retarded" . Retarded isn't a word I use but it also wouldn't offend me.

I use it. and a few other words that are definitely not nice.

If I said it in front of someone who is "special needs" or who had a family member that was, I would probably feel terribly.

eta: I do not use it to make fun of anyone. I use it to describe things that don't make sense...and when I am too lazy to think of the myriad other words I could use to describe the same thing.

Re: Those with "Special Needs" family or friends...

Yes I HATE that word....my brother is severely LD, so he would call himself retarded and it was upsetting to hear it from him, but more so from others.

Now I work with hearing impaired children and one of my students is Developmentally Disabled; we were waiting for the bus last year and this 4th grader asked him a question...one my student clearly did not understand. and the kid replied "what are you retarded!' I was soo mad!
I pulled him aside and told him that just because someone is different that you, that doesn't make the retarded and that I never wanted to hear him say that word again...he cried...I didn't care.
I think its sad how we treat others who are different from us; and I especially hate when children are cruel to each other....i think parents need to teach their children to have tolerance and compassion for those who might need a little extra help

Re: Those with "Special Needs" family or friends...

My cousin's daughter is profoundly brain damaged. She is 13 and has the mental age of an 18 month old. I once used the word retarded to describe something stupid in her presence and then stopped cold, realizing that what I said was probably hurtful and mean.

My cousin assured me that to her it's just a word and in no way reflects on my feeling for her daughter, who of course I adore. I learned that day to watch what I say, but also that a word is just a word...

Re: Those with "Special Needs" family or friends...

As a mother of a daughter who has special needs and someone who has two BILs who are mentally challenged, yes, I find the word offensive. I think any word that has a derogatory connotation is offensive. If you can't think of another word to use in its place, don't say anything.

Re: Those with "Special Needs" family or friends...

I teach students with special needs in a special school and I don't use the word. However it has become such a part of mainstream language (right or wrong) that I have even heard students in my building use it.

It is/was used to describe a level of intelligence. Some clinicians still use it within their settings and it can still be alarming to hear. In a politically correct world, the term "developmentally disabled" is certainly more appropriate and not as hurtful.

Re: Those with "Special Needs" family or friends...

i think its terrible if someone would make fun of someone that's different.

i hear how some people make fun of people who stutter. they have feelings. the way they make fun of them must really hurt there feelings. they're people too. some are just a little different than others

My brother has severe mental retardation, but I don't get offended when I hear the word used loosely.
It has become a slang term and I just don't think about it much...

I absolutely cannot stand when people use that word. It makes me angry. I also can't stand when people say "sped" or "special ed."

I guess being a teachers of children with special needs I am quite conscious of people's language when referring to others.

I don't like "sped" but my child was a special ed student & I don't mind that. Having an IEP & being in special ed classes is an awesome priviledge IMO. Every kid should get the services & care my child got.

Do you get offended when people call things "retarted"?

I was in the supermarket and the cashier kept saying everything was "retarted". The prices, the people, etc. Chat Icon

A few years ago, I found out my (then) boss's son had Downs Syndrome, and since then, I always I watch what I say around other people in general. I admit that I used the word in the past, but I am so careful to what I say to people now....

Chat Icon

I absolutely hate it. I think it is so disrespectful to use the term so loosely. If I hear someone say it, I will say something to them. (Even if it is someone in passing).

That ticks me off too...even when my gay friends use it to tease their friends. It just irks me to use someone's life as a frame of reference to explain a negative feeling.Chat Icon

I have caught myself referring to things as retarded and have felt horrible in doing so. Eliminating the derogatory use of this word is something I am working on to better myself in 2008.
