Thoughts: A friend posted on FB today...(current events related)
That they had an 'intruder drill' at her daughter's school today. Her daughter is in kindergarden in an NYC public school. She said her daughter had to hide in a cabinet and was told to be very quiet.
For the record, I am not yet a parent so I'm not quite sure where my opinion on this falls. I know I am 100% appalled that we live in a place now where babies have to go through this, but I also think it may just be the new normal. My friend did not seem at all perturbed by it and said she is glad her daughter is learning this now.
Just interested in others' thoughts.

Also. I would like to be informed of this beforehand and have an option of my kid not participating.

I no longer have a kid in school. But if I did, I would like to know this ahead of time. So I could go over it with my child.

I'm an educator.
It's Federal Law. There is no choice. There is no opt out. Schools must do at least one "lock down" one "lock out" and one evacuation drill at least once a year. And then several fire drills in fall and spring.
Been this way since Columbine.

This amazes me. I work at a private school in the city. In my time there we have done 2 fire drills a year and none of the other drills. I'm very intrigued by this.

I totally agree. I'm in an upstate district and we have to complete 3 fire drills in the fall, 3 in the spring and we definitely do 2 or more lockdown drills. There is no parent notice- it's a safety regulation.

Just curious what kind of cabinet she was in? THAT part sounds questionable to me. I do have my students sit in our large closets during our lockdown drills b/c thats the area furthest away and on the same side of the door ( ie cannot see us)

She actually JUST edited to say her daughter 'had to find a hiding spot' so maybe her daughter said cabinet at first or cubby but meant closet? I'm not sure. I've sent her a message and I'm waiting to hear back.

Drills of lock down/lock out are fine by me.
I just wouldn't want my kid in a cabinet unless I knew ahead of time.....and as much as i respect the law, I'd rather have my child be absent instead of stuffed in a cabinet or asked to find a hiding spot, KWIM?
I'm just going by the perspective of my child..I know DC and this would cause anxiety.

Really sad that this is the world we live in, but it is, and I'd be glad the school is prepared. It's as much a practice of the teachers as the students, and when I think about that hero teacher Vicki Soto that hid her kids and saved their lives, i'm even more in support of the drills.

Re: Thoughts: A friend posted on FB today...(current events related)
We do them in my school (NYCDOE) and we have to gather the students in the corner of the room (outside of the view of the small window on the door) and lock the doors. I think its really important, and I practice it more often then the school does. However, we do not lock them in cabinets or closets during a drill. That is scary, and I would never subject a kid to that. I was really cautious when I taught them the procedure and told them its "something we do when there is an emergency and we need to stay safe." I never called it an intruder drill or anything that would really scare them. There is a way to be prepared without scaring them for life.

I don't LIKE that this is our reality...but it is our reality none the less. I'd rather my son be aware and alive than innocently naive and dead. I'm sure they don't just say "someone is here to kill you what are you gonna do?" I'm sure with young children they need to discuss good people / vs bad people in a way that they can understand without frightening them

Yes though as far as I know putting students in a closet is not in the protocol, though I do not work in an elementary school so perhaps it is different in the lower grades.
It is our reality. I wish we lived in a world where this precaution was not necessary but it is and I would want my son as trained and prepared for his safety as possible. I do think parents should be notified prior so that they can talk to their children and explain it them prior.

Yeah, that's pretty much all I guess I'd like - some time to explain it myself in my own way, you know?
In light of the events at Newton, I did tell my pre-k'er to always listen to the teacher & to do what is instructed (even if sounds silly at the time) if things became serious. To keep quiet and do exactly as told.

Re: Thoughts: A friend posted on FB today...(current events related)
My daughter is in first grade and her school did a lockdown drill today. We the parents were informed before the holidays broke up by email and by a letter from the principal. We received another letter yesterday from the principal and an email and phone call last night so we knew it was going on.
I spoke to my daughter about it...very scant details but brought it up in case she had any questions etc which she did not.
Today I picked her and a friend up from school. I asked them if they did the drill and they said they did. They both told me some details such as they had to go to their hiding spot in the room - they hid in groups and that was their assigned spot. The teacher turned off the lights, locked the door and put a cover on the door. The teacher told them they had to be very quiet When it was over the teacher praised them for being so good, for listening to her so well and for being so quiet. She also told them that she had worked at this school for 15 years and she has never had a bad person come into the school or have to escape from a fire BUT she likes doing these drills with her kids just in case..according to my daughter its like they know the words to a song off my heart so she wants them to know the rules of all the drills off by heart too. Both my daughter and my friend were very matter of fact about it and the only complaint was that it took SO long "like 10 minutes mom"...
I do not like that this is the society we live in. I do not like that my 6 year old child is subjected to these type of lockdown drills. I do not like that each day I drop my precious child off at school now I hug her even tighter and the thought does cross my mind that something might happen to her while she is at school. I do not like any of this. BUT I do like that my daughters school is preparing our kids for an event like this and hopefully with enough practice and god forbid anything does happen at school my DD and the other kids will follow the rules that they have learned and steps they have practiced and god willing it will help keep them safe

I think NYC is mandated to do lock down drills. The teachers close the doors, put paper over the windows and draw the shades. Thats what we were told by DDs principal. She is also in a NYC public school. My nephew also mentioned to my sis that they do lockdown drills in his school and they have to hide in a corner or under their desk. Sad this is what this world has to come too.

This! I am an educator as well and parents are not notified. If a real intruder came in would you want the teacher to not include your child and try to protect them bc you opted out and need to be informed first? It is for the safety of the children.

I changed my stance when I thought about it some more. I would like to know that this is standard now - the hiding part...just so I could explain things in my own way, too. Or be there to answer any questions, you know? That's all.
I know the teachers/admin etc have the children's safety at heart, I don't doubt that.

We practice all types of drills non of which involve hiding in closets or finding a hiding spot, we all hide in a corner of the room away from the door. I teach in nyc

I don't like it.
Chances of something happening are so small.
Yes I know they do happen - but with children that little I would think the teachers being trained and having a plan is more important than having 4yr old kids hiding in a closet once a year.
