thoughts? parents using family members address
to send children to a better school. I'm watching the view and there is a woman who got 10 days in Jail for using her father's address to send her child to a better school.
what do you think the penalty should be if caught?
I think Jail is excessive, but IRL I have heard of several families using family addresses in Syosset to send their kids from Queens to school in the syosset district. Very unfair to Syosset tax payers and wherever else this is happening.

Re: thoughts? parents using family members address
I think they should have to pay money back for services they received. Of course everyone wants their child in a good district, but you can't go about it that way. My mom was going to do this for someone a few years ago. They were a military family and did not want to send their kids to uniondale schools and asked my mom if they could use her address. Thankfully we talked her out of it.

Re: thoughts? parents using family members address
Jail Time- yes excessive!
But it is soooo wrong! This was a big issue in valley stream central school district, where I went, but more so years after I graduated. Its probably done often there because that SD is so close to Queens. My cousins are on the school board and I heard the SD has to hire people to track down the ones who were dijng this. I heard they had to get proof from everyone and even followed kids to see where they went home to.

Re: thoughts? parents using family members address
I also want ti say that people do this in NYC too. I work in anA rated school in queens and we ofter get families using other peoples addresses so they can go to our school. My principal does his best to catch them. Some parents will show up 4 times in a week with different addresses trying to get in. At tht point my principla flips out. It makes a big problem in our school because we are over crowded. My coworkers on first grade have 30-32 kids with only real seats for 26.

I would be too scared to do it but I understand wanting to do it. If you can't afford to move to a better school district, why should your children suffer. I know that it is MORALLY wrong. But, figuring that I would cheat, steal or kill for DD if need be - I could see lying for her too.

I'd like to see at least twice the school tax as a fine or yes, even jail time. It's fraud - plain & simple.
You can get waivers from districts for extenuating circumstances (family moving, parents divorce, afterschool care in that district). There is a process to go through.

ETA: Before anyone reports me - DD is only 5 months old AND I happen to like the three closest public schools to my house so there!

Re: thoughts? parents using family members address
I will admit that we thought about doing this when I worked FT. Not for the better school district, but because we were out of options as far as child care goes.
My m-i-l watched my two kids and my b-i-l's two kids and could not fit them all in her car. Genevieve was going to start kindergarten and we had no way of getting her on the bus or off the bus. Before/after care times were not good enough and my job was not flexible. My in-laws pay taxes, so why should they not be allowed to go to that school when they were there from 5:30am until 6pm?
I was lucky enough that my business took off and I am able to be home during the week.
I probably would not have ended up doing it anyway. We would have had to pay money that we did not have for someone to come to the house and take care of the bus for us. But just wanted to give a reason why some people might do something like this.

Re: thoughts? parents using family members address
I think penalty is to pay them taxes rates based on a minimal value in that district.
Frankly I'd WILLINGLY pay if I was in the same spot
So the super rich get the super rich schools and I can't access it because I'm poor, just moved or widowed, or god knows whatever reasons.. I think that's WRONG.
My coworker's parents did it for him. He used his grandmother's address for him and his brothers. When he was old enough he had to drive them etc..
Education is important and as child who was raised poor I think its CRIMINAL that there's a penalty for parents trying to do the right thing. If you don't give them options, you are sentencing them to a sub-par education.
We never cheated but I've offered my address up for any who needed it. And I'm glad to do so.
ETA: I remember classmates got 'bailed out' to a better school because some aunt had moved into the better district. We envied them.

Re: thoughts? parents using family members address
I'm in the minority here but I think if it's your parents address it's okay, as long as they agree to it. They pay school taxes and don't have any children in school.
I have a rental house and my former tenants were still using my address to keep their kids in school. I reported them. They didn't get any jail time.

Re: thoughts? parents using family members address
I don't think it's a big deal and think there should be school of choice here like there is in many other states. Afterall, don't we all say children are the future, and a better education is in the best interest of all.

This is a good point. I had heard they were going to try to change things, where older people who no longer have kids in the SDs shouldn't have to pay the excessive school taxes...but I don't think anything came of it.
I also feel with the taxes the way they are on LI as a whole, every.single.school should be up to par and amazing.
But, I don't really have an answer. I can see both sides.

Re: thoughts? parents using family members address
Also in the minority. Most people want the best for their kids and education is no different. If as as a pp had stated it is their parents or even a family member who pays taxes and has no kids then I think there's nothing wrong with using their address so that the kids get a better education.
Honestly instead of being upset about people doing this we should be upset on why people feel the need to do this. If you are well off and in a great district you probably hate that people do this, but if your are poor and want the best for your kids and you have this option whether right or wrong why wouldn't you do this and give your child the best chance at life.

Re: thoughts? parents using family members address
I think they should have to repay the cost per student in tha district- on Long island you can pay to go to another district - my parents looked into this for my younger brother - this was 10 years ago
we used transportation from the northport district when huntington did not have late buses to pick from private school- we paid a monthly fee or a daily rate
i think there are ways for districts to get money from out of district parents without strainign the system much or at all and should

I agree with this as long as you can get a waive. I've seen peole get waivers for kids are using their grandparents for before/after care.
I think it's a slippery slope with rules which is why you follow the districts policy on waivers. That's why they have one.

I was just thinking this. If I was paying the taxes, I would think it would be ok to have my grandchildren attend the school that I was paying taxes for since I had no school aged children. Then again, I'd probably think my grandchildren would stay over a lot since it would be more convenient so they'd be like part time residents.

SO true. A coworker of mine has a very small home in a nice neighborhood with a great school and pays through the nose for school taxes (we have the highest in the state, and even in the nation).
She's always saying "I have no kids, so why should I pay? My kids went to school somewhere else and they say that their kids can't use my address?"

Your point makes sense but if evey grandparent in a good SD did this for their grandchildren do you know how crowded the schools would be? Everyone is always complaining about class size, wait til there is 40 in a class, you'll really be PO.
And yes those people are paying school taxes and dont have kids, but imagine that same amount of money coming in but for 25-50% more kids in school. Programs are already being cit becaise of lack of money.
