Thrush? What do I do?
I think I might have thrush...here is why:
DD is three weeks and 2 days old. She has been nursing both on the breast and with a bottle since she was born. My nipples have not been sore since a few days after getting home from the hospital, but all of a sudden - yesterday they have been very painful. It even hurts when I pump - though not as much as when she is nursing...when she nurses - I can hardly take it.
My question is, who do i go to for dagnosis and treatment? my dr? ob? pediatrician?

Re: Thrush? What do I do?
I could be wrong but I am almost postive that if you had thrush your baby would have it too. You would see a white film on your DD's tongue. If you scrap her tongue and the film doesn't come off then it is probably thrush. If it does come off then it's not and a little bit of water after she nurses will wash it away. I thought DS had thrush and this is what the ped. told me to do. I was also very sore with him. Maybe between pumping and nursing your nipples are to sore. I would hold off on the pumping maybe for a few days and see what happens.

Re: Thrush? What do I do?
I remember my pain going away and then coming back. I think there are different things to look for for thrush. It might be the start of a clogged milk duct, or an infection. It doesn't hurt to call you dr to see what's going on. I'd call in the morning, so you know before the weekend.
Feel better!

Re: Thrush? What do I do?
If you breast feels hot in certain spots and hard it might be a clogged duck. I had that with DD and it was uncomfortable. I just kept pumping per my OBGYN and within a few days it was gone. I also had mastsis with DS and with that I had a fever and chills plus a very sore nipple to the point that it hurt so bad when DS would latch and nurse.

Re: Thrush? What do I do?
Could be thrush. If so, both you and the baby should be treated at the same time. I would see the ped first. He/she won't treat you but thrush is more obvious when its in the baby's mouth than on the nipples. Some generalists and even OBs may not be too inclined to treat you if its not obvious. It helps if the baby has a confirmed case. Some links about thrush: thrush 1 thrush 2 thrush3
