Thyroid Problems?
Does anyone have a history of thyroid problems or know anything about them? I am 8 wks pregnant - when I went for my 5 wk appt they found my TSH level was 6.5 so they recommended I see an endochronoglist. I saw him and he repeated the bloodwork and ran the antibody test. In the meantime, he started me on synthroid. He just called (2 wks later) to say he found my TSH level to be 2.59 and negative for antibodies (not sure if I'm wording this right). The following day (after my appt w/ the endo) I had an appt with my reg. MD for a check-up, he ran bloodwork and found my TSH level to be 3.1. In past years, he said my level was normally under 2 (about 1.4).
So now everyone is confused. The endo still wants me to continue the synthroid as he suggests keeping the TSH level under 2.5 during pregnancy, but he has no explanation for the fluctuation and can't explain why my level was low, but it was neg for antibodies.
Not sure if this makes sense to anyone, but I thought maybe someone w/ thyroid probelm experience could shed some light on this.
Thanks so much!

Re: Thyroid Problems?
I have an underactive Thyroid.
All I know was that my levels weren't right. I know it usually takes time to regulate your levels with meds it took me about 6 months to be on the right ammount they don't like to give too much too soon.
Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Re: Thyroid Problems?
I am hypothryriod as well (underactive) and take synthriod to regulate it. When I was pregnant with my daughter the first 4 months the thyriod levels can fluctuate as the baby is not producing their own hormones yet and is taking yours. So you need to be checked more often and have the dose of synthriod changed accordingly. After 4 months or so, the baby usually makes its own hormones and you stablize more. Also how much weight you gain or lose can affect the levels changing as well. I am now 5 months pregnant with #2 and have only gained about 5 pounds this time and my TSH has not changed at all, but they are expecting once I gain more wieght it might shift.

Re: Thyroid Problems?
I have hypothyroid and am always negative for antibodies.
Iw as told that the levels could change drastically day to day.
Mine was always around 2....But now they would like it under 2.5 when PG or TTC...
When mine was over 5 I was put on synthroid.
I think you should stay on it and be tested regularly liek they are doing...sounds like the best plan being PG>

Re: Thyroid Problems?
I have a severely underactive thyroid, and I was recently diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. My doctor and I have been working over 3 years now to regulate my thyroid, but still no luck. I take Synthroid regularly - 175mcg daily. I should be 300 lbs with the way my thyroid is functioning - I'm surprised it's even working.

I have an underactive Thyroid as well-I am on Synthroid. I go for blood work every 3 months and my levels seem to be regulated it def. took about 4-5 months to happen.

Re: Thyroid Problems?
I also have Hashimoto's Thyroid. I am underactive. If you have negative for antibodies it probably means that yours is not autoimmune related like mine. Hashimoto's is an autoimmune form meaning that my body ate it away I guess in layman's terms. If you do not have an autoimmune version yours is probably due to your pregnancy. Also if you are eating a lot of foods like broccolli that can skew the results since broccolli and spinach are iodine inhiberts. I took synthroid all through my pregnancy. It can't hurt you. It is just replacing something that your body normally produces anyways that you are just not absorbing properly.
You should be seeing the endo around every other month since you are pregnant. I only have to see him now every 6 months since I had my daughter.
I hope that helps. If you have any other questions please feel free to FM me.

Re: Thyroid Problems?
Thanks so much - that's ALL very helpful, and I feel a little better. The endo did a sonogram of my thyroid and pretty much ruled out Hashimoto's. My general physician was confused by my TSH level b/c he said, if it was due to my pregnancy, it probably wouldn't have affected my level yet (6.5 at 5 wks).
Anyway, all this info is great, and hopefully when I go for my next bloodwork, things will be a little more regulated.
Thanks again

Re: Thyroid Problems?
I have a wacky thyroid like yours, was under control w/meds, shot up to TSH 14, then between 4-6 after a meds increase, and finally it's at 3. Maybe it just takes a little while to balance out? Best wishes to you!
