Ticketmaster question

So my friend was buying us NKOTB tickets today and she said that the floor seats sold out really really fast! And that almost immediately they were available on TICKETMASTER'S ticketexchange for like triple the price. I just looked and that is true.. Isn't that scalping? Isn't scalping illegal? How is that allowed??

I think it is illegal in NY to sell tickets over face value, I think in NJ brokers, etc. can sell over face value

Re: Ticketmaster question

So I guess maybe the ticketmaster, scalping section of the site, is based out of ny.

But the people selling them may be in ny.. so how can they go on the website and sell them. Or are you only allowed to post tickets for sale on that site if you live out of NY? I am so confusedChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

New York state changed laws. You can sell as high as you want as long as you are a certain distance away from the venue. The scalper must be between 500 and 1500 feet from the box office, depending upon how many seats the venue is.

Here is an article on Stubhub about the legality of reselling tickets - Ticketmaster is also mentioned here. Look under the "But is it legal" section.

Re: Ticketmaster question

Ticketmaster or Ticketbastard as I like to call them, is such a scam.

They work hand in hand with the scalpers/re-sellers making sure that the greater ticket-buying public get hosed.

I believe that our former, wonderful Governor Eliot Spitzer actually repealed some of the ticket scalping laws (that were mostly ignored anyway) last year, so now it's basically a free-for-all.

Re: Ticketmaster question

Wow.. I just think it was amazing how fast most of the floor seats were scooped up and posted on that section (ticketshare) or whatever it was.

It was like 10 minutes. Do they have certain ways to get access to a lot of tickets faster than the general public???

It really makes me mad!!!Chat Icon

Re: Ticketmaster question

As a side note... I believe today was the presale for tickets. Just because there are no floor seats, or good seats right now, doesn't mean there won't be any when they go on sale to the general public. I believe TM only presales a set amount of tickets per section.

Absolutely. The scalpers have complex software programs which connect directly in to Ticketmaster the second that tickets go on sale.

Really.. so I guess we could buy new ones that are better seats and sell the old onesChat Icon Oh well.. See a bunch of us going are teachers and don't have access or time to buy tickets on workdays, and the only one who is going that does.. has jury duty that dayChat Icon So that is why we jumped on the presale option

Why would tickets go on sale on a weekday? Don't they usually go on sale on a weekend?? Whatever... So pizzed in general..

I can't belive they have special software to buy tickets quick.. What a racket!!!Chat Icon

Re: Ticketmaster question

By the way, that Ticketexchange is Ticketbastard's way of getting their hands inside the scalper's pockets. They know that there are a lot of people out there willing to pay a premium price for tix, so when tix go on sale, they hold aside a certain number and sell them at auction on their own site, rather than letting the brokers buy them up and making all the $$$.

Believe me, this is one of the biggest legal scams in history.

Yes, though not all of the tix sold on there are the 'premium' tix. Some of them are being sold by fans or others who have purchased tix, sorta like Stub Hub.
