Tip: The importance of Vacation Insurance

I work in travel and hear stories like captincharisma's often. I've had stories of people who got into accidents and couldnt travel to deaths in the family and couldnt travel. They have lost payments from deposits to their entire vacation all because of no insurance. Their is nothing I nor the tour or cruise operator can do for them since they had no insurance.

Think of a vacation as an investment. You would want to protect your investment and insurance is one of those things that you want to have and hope you never have to use it. Depending on the cruise line and length of cruise they have vacation protection that ranges from $49 per person to $129 per person. Or you can use an outside insurance company such as travelguard, CSA or Travelsavers (which is now called something else but I cant remember it at this time) One couple had insurance and had to cancel 5 days prior. They got their entire money back within a week. I cant stress it enough how important it is to have insurance for cruise and/or tours. You honestly never know and a few hundred dollars can honestly save you thousands.

If anyone has any questions regarding travel insurance please feel free to ask and I will do my best to assist.

Re: Tip: The importance of Vacation Insurance

Since DH got sick, we always purchase travel insurance. I don't think we would have ever purchased insurance, though, if DH hadn't gotten sick.

Thanks for the advice! It is definitely good advice.

Re: Tip: The importance of Vacation Insurance

my mom is a travel agent too - and she hates doing bookings when people don't get the insurance. there have been so many situations where she has said "thankfully they had insurance!"

she often feels like she is twisting people's arm to get it though ... but stuff happens and it is the only guarantee.

It is usually the coverage. With the cruise line vacation protection is any where from $49 - $129 per person. They may cover cancellations due to weather, air delays or health reasons why you would need to cancel. Outside insurace is based on your age and total cost of your trip or per person cost. I have a couple that purchased insurance aged 77 and 80. They are in the same age group so the insurace was $212 for a $1500 cruise. With another insurnce agency they were in 2 different age groups and it was about $250. GoGo Worldwide vacations regardless how much your trip is they have a standard charge of $59 per person. Another package company we use they just added hurricane protection to their insurance option.

Outside insurance covers a lot more such as: unforeseen events can force you to cancel or postpone your trip and lose any prepayments you've made.

Hurricane evacuation disrupts a family vacation. trip insurance reimbursed them for the cost of hotel, meals and other expenses related to evacuating the area and returning home.

A broken leg before the ski trip. Ear infection before a cruise. House is flooded. A critically ill relative gets sick while you are in the middle of your vacation. One can contact the 24-Hour Emergency Hotline for assistance in making return travel arrangements.

I suggest CSA to all my clients. They cover things like if you get called for jury duty, identity theft, terrorists threat (i.e., your scheduled to do a trip to Israel and you hear of bombings. Now you're scared to go. You can cancel your trip and get your money back), military leave, death in family, witness a birth, and things like that.

We always buy it, especially because it covers lost luggage as well. I couldn't believe that DH's family did not buy it on our 4K vacation to Disney. Luckily nothing went wrong.

Yea it's great that it covers lost luggage. That is my biggest fear when traveling. I have actually had my luggage stuck on a plane and sent home while I got stuck in Vegas (long story) and we had to buy stuff for one night. I had some essentials in my carry on bag, but not having my stuff made me so upset. Next day we were on a flight home and our bags were in the lost luggage area.

Re: Tip: The importance of Vacation Insurance

I totally agree with this, in the UK everyone buys travel insurance and I had never heard of it until I moved here.

Last time we came to NY my little boy needed to have a small operation and we weren't comfortable travelling back on my planned travel dates, British Airways couldn't change the dates of my travel because of the type of ticket I bought. So I called my travel insurance company and they helped me to get on another flight the following week so that my baby could have follow up treatment in NY. I was reimbursed the money for the flight I missed and also for the treatment that he needed.

So, buy travel insurance! You can buy a yearly policy so that you only have to buy it once a year

See I always thought travel insurance was just a big scam because it didn't cover the things you would really need it to cover like illness, death in family, etc. I thought I remembered reading somewhere that it only covered very very little. Anyway, it's good to know that that's not the case. Thanks for posting this!

Thanks for the tip. I never buy travel insurance, but always think about it. After reading this, I will probably always but it. Usually it isn't that expensive, and can actually save us alot of $.

Yes there are:

I would not book insurance thru the cruiseline itself - If the cruise line has financial problems and goes under you won't be reimbursed.

There is a great site - insuremytrip

This site will lay out the top trip insurance companies and what they offer and how much.

99.9% won't cover things like allowing you to cancel if you just decide not to cruise or your job won't let you out - something to think about.

The real important part with buying cruise insurance is to buy it WHEN you book - 99% of them have a pre-existing conditions clause - which will be waived if you purchase the insurance within a certain amount of days of booking (usually 7-20 days after booking). Otherwise they might not cover you if your father or grandparent who was not in good health at the time of booking the trip now has more serious health issues and you now can't cruise - or now dies.

We always get the insurance - it is worth the small amount of money you pay to have comfort. If you don't have it and cruise you can most likely just burn that money if you can't go. I know I can't afford to do that.

Read the different plans - since many cover different things (also there are some companies that offer travel protection but are not actual insurance companies) and pay in different ways.

By this, I mean that - some offer airlifting for medical emergencies or health if you get sick, others don't but will cover baggages etc - others will cover all the above. Some have cancel for any reason (but many are getting away from this and they are the most expensive)

Be careful when you purchase what form of refund you will receive. Some will reimburse you straight out - other plans - often the less expensive ones will give you "travel vouchers" which means if you are out 1K they will give you 1k in certificate that is good with the travel agent you booked with - and you then must use it within one year.

Let me know if you have any other questions - we have researched the plans a few times b/c we when we booked this cruise things were up in the air.

Sorry this was so long but I hope it helped some.

Re: Tip: The importance of Vacation Insurance

We always buy the insurance since it doesnt cost that much and you never know what could happen. Three years ago my family went on a cruise and on one of the islands my mom and her boyfriend rented a motorcycle. They got in an accident and my mom was severly hurt. The travel insurance -Travel Guad - was so amazing. They handled and covered everything----he hospital stay in St.Martin and Tortola, her first class flight back to NY, a limo in NY from JFK to LIJ and even refunded her two days of the cruise lost.

Re: Tip: The importance of Vacation Insurance

totally agree!! Even for cruises out of NY/NJ, we take the insurance.

Our HM was in October. You think, what could happen in October - no snowstorms, no hurricanes on the West coast? Well, that was the year of the CA wildfires! Our flight to LA was delayed so bad we missed our connection to Tahiti. We had to spend the night and most of the next day in LA and take the next flight to Tahiti.

Oh, and I would also say - although internet deals are great, for out of country or unusual travel - use a travel agent! Our TA was awesome during this time, and lord knows I was NOT a happy camper!

Re: Tip: The importance of Vacation Insurance

I used to work for a company that administered travel insurance policies for all of the major cruislines and several Travel agencies. I never am the type of person to spend money on something extra liek that - but after working for that company - I'll never think twice!!!

If you are on a cruise and become seriously ill, it can be very expensive. Not to be morbid, but there were many instances of evacuation and expatriation of remains (somebody died) and evacuation alone costs thousands of dollars.

Re: Tip: The importance of Vacation Insurance

I will always get it from now on. The first time I got it was for our honeymoon in Mexico last year. If I hadn't gotten it we would have been out a ton of $ and our HM would have been ruined because of a hurricane. Luckily we were able to re-route our trip to Puerto Rico and got almost all our $ back.

I always get travel insurance as well. Once it was explained to me how much it would cover, including natural disasters, I took it, considering for some reason, we usually take vacation in hurricane season. (LOL)

The amount of money they ask for it, is totally worth it!

Re: Tip: The importance of Vacation Insurance

I will always get it now. We went on a 7 day cruise once with no luggage. JFK lost it. We were told we could have claimed more with insurance then just what Delta gave us.
