Servers are usually only making 3.25 an hour though.
isn't that ILLEGAL
Not in the food industry because they can make it up in tips. I dont know the entire law with it, but that is what my cousin who used to be a waitress told me.

Servers where?
anyplace I have ever worked at, actually just got bumped 3 years ago from 2.13 an hour. That is why it is so important to tip them.
I worked at Outback, Lonestar, Applebees, Chevys, red lobster...all the same. They only pay you to tax it..

Re: Tipping question
Directly from the Department of labor website
Tip Credit – Employers of “tipped employees” must pay a cash wage of at least $2.13 per hour if they claim a tip credit against their minimum wage obligation. If an employee's tips combined with the employer's cash wage of at least $2.13 per hour do not equal the minimum hourly wage, the employer must make up the difference. Certain other conditions must also be met.

I would not classify them as waitstaff. I also wouldn't classify Starbucks baristas as waitstaff. But, that's just my professional HR opinion.

I tip them...I feel they deserve it. Not cold stone, they dont serve me, they mix up soem ice cream, hard as it may be...I dont tip like I said the fry Guy and Mc Donalds even though hot oil cooking is hard as well....and Starbucks??? I cant get it. I KNOW they pay over minimum wage there.

Re: Tipping question
I am more "conservative" when tipping. Yes, I was a waitress for 3 years. I BROKE MY AZZ and I made excellent tips.
When someone gives me crappy service, I give them a crappy tip. When someone gives me excellent service, I give them an excellent tip. But, I do think that tipping, in general, is getting out of control.
Where's my tip ?

Re: Tipping question
what a lot of people don't realize as well, is that the server actually pays to wait on you. Every place I have worked at, you have to give up 3%of your sales at the end of the night.
Goes to host, busboy, bar.
so if your check is 100.00, right off the back, the server owes 3.00. If you don't tip, they lost money waiting on you. So in reality, if you are a 15% tipper, server only gets 12.
ETA: I am sure the coldstone people don't have to pay for customers.

I am sure they don't,because the turnover is much more quicker

Re: Tipping question
Tipping has gotten out of control. I feel a tip should only be expected if you're - dining in AND the food is being served to me at my table - ordering take out AND the food is delivered

WHY do places like Cold Stone and Marble Slab Creameries look for tips? And other WEIRD places?
I mean its their job to serve me the ice cream, and I pay an arm and a leg for it...why must I tip them? I dont tip the Mcdonalds Fry man?
Couldn't agree more. We don't tip at these places. I'm a retail pharmacist and no one tips me.

Re: Tipping question
I worked as a waitress and was paid $3.50 an hour. The place I worked at was SLOW and even if I made decent tips, it never usually added up to minimum wage and I was NEVER compensated.
I think tips jars in certain places are ridiculous, especially because those people are at least making minimum wage, if not more. Starbucks, Cold Stone, Friendly's, Dunkin Donuts? It's a bit extreme. What next... fast food places? Mcdonald's and Burger King?

Re: Tipping question
I agree- I try to be a generous tipper at restaurants- but I don't usually tip at Cold Stone or Starbucks. I am paying $5.50 for an ice cream- come on???!!! No one tipped me when I worked at a clothing store- and I had to run all around...

I forgot where I was but on the receipt it said "tips are appreciated"
I wrote "dont fry bacon naked"
I feel tipping is an option, not a must.

i tip at restaurnats where we are served. i don't tip at cold stone/starbucks, etc. if i am already paying you $5 for a coffee, what you do want my .37 change for?? sometines i'll throw the change in the cup just because, but i don't go out of my way to tip them.
i'm waiting for the tip cup to surface at the self-serve island of coffee in 7-11.

RIGHT...I Forgot Starbucks!!!
WTH? Pour me the coffe, its ..........thats so hard I have to tip? Asking me if I want whipped cream is something deserving of an extra dollar? I just dont see it.
What aggrevates me more about Starbuks is... the barista job used to be difficult. They had to take the grined coffee... take the scoop and attach it to the machine. It was manual work.
Now a lot of the starbuks have the "machines" where the barista pushes a button and out comes the espresso. Give me a break.
I much prefer when they make me the coffee from scratch. Makes me feel a little better when I am paying $5.02 after tax for a Venti Iced Pumpkin Spiced Latte.

That is one of the reasons why I protest Starbucks. I refuse to pay that much money for a cup of coffee. I'll take my $1.09 medium sized french vanilla coffee from BP over starbucks any day
