Re: Tipping question

Although I don't agree w/this all the time, people in the Food Service Industry will feel it's ok to have a tip jar because they are performing a service for you.Just like bartenders & waitresses they are serving you!
Actually it isn't the same. Waitresses and bartenders usually don't get paid minimum wage as do workers in Starbucks or Stone Cold. They get paid about $2:10 per hour as opposed to the minimum wage or above. That is why it's standard to tip waitresses and bartenders. It's the only way they make their money. I don't know why Starbucks and those alike have tip jars. I guess it's just a nice little bonus at the end of the day.

Re: Tipping question
just thought of this:
I HIGHLY doubt that the "tip jarrers" are claiming those tips as income as waiters and waitresses are required to do.

IMO tipping the people of cold stone is understandable....
tipping dunkin donut people....THAT i don't get
How are they different?
I understand that the cold stone kids have to mix the ice cream, but if I order a bagel with cream cheese at DD, they have to cut it, and smear the cream cheese on it... they have to prepare my coffee the way I want it, regardless of how picky I am about it. So aren't they essentially doing the same thing? IMO, neither should be tipped.
I also think the tipping thing is out of control and I agree with you Sue - I highly doubt tip jarrers are claiming those tips. Plus they are getting paid at least minimum wage unlike waitresses.

Re: Tipping question
tipping, IMHO, has become WAY out of control! I mean, come on! My DH brought home cold stone the other night for me ($18 for 2 cups) and they have the nerve to ask for tips? If the company didn't charge so much for the damn ice cream than maybe I'd tip..... You have the nerve to pay your employees $3 and change an hour to serve me and then ask for a tip when you charge way too much for a cup of ice cream? Why would the employees put up with being paid so little when the companies are making HUGE profits? If I were an employee, I'd look for another job that won't take advantage of me like that! Don't tell me it's hard finding a decent paying job when you're a college student..... I worked in Macy's making $7/hr with commission (and that's a long time ago) throughtout college in the shoe dept. I had no special skills that landed me that job. IMO that's much better than being treated like cheap slave labor at an overpriced icream store.
This whole tipping just because someone has put out a tip jar at these places really pi$$es me off! I will tip (and I usually overtip as a norm b/c I'm always afraid of undertipping and I"m not too good at figuring out what the tip should be) waiters/waiteresses, the shampoo girl, hair dresser, nail girl, delivery guy/gal, etc... not as some one said earlier the fry guy at McDonalds!

Re: Tipping question
I usually just tip if I am in a restaurant. I went to DD yesterday and my order came to 5.99..I threw the penny in the jar, while the girl next to me who ordered a donut and coffee told the guy "keep the change"..Probably like $2 worth of change. I used to work in McDs and I got a tip once. This little old man just handed me a $1 cuz I got him coffee, same thing happened a few times when I hostessed in the Marriott. Never did we leave a tip jar out though. I love cold stone, but, I never left a tip..I guess cuz I didnt want to hear them sing. Ooh..Over them summer, at the take out window I tipped the "Friendly's" Server because we had a lot of people, big orders, and they were pretty patient with us.
