Tips for starting "real" solids?

I think Logan's ready to start some "real" solids.

Not baby food, but actual cut up pieces of adult food.

What did you start with?

When did you start?

How do you overcome the insane fear of choking?

TIA

Thanks for asking this....I was just wondering the same thing. Kayla is 6 months old and I was going to try and give her those teething cookies but I chickened out! Chat Icon

Re: Tips for starting "real" solids?

I suppose the first things we started were puffs and cheerios- from there we gave her little bits of things we were eating- lots of chopped meat things- like meatballs, meatloaf, hamburger (we eat lots of things like that)- scrambled eggs (I think they're supposed to be 1 to start this- not sure, but we did it at around 10 months). We made sure everything we gave DD was seasoned like we ate it- so meatballs have garlic and oregano, etc- didn't want her used to eating bland foods.

He does puffs already.

And apparently yesterday at daycare he was trying to swipe the other kids' Goldfish and Cheerios.

We are just starting with "real" foods, so I can't offer much help, but here are a few things we've tried...

Pastina - most of the tiny stars came right back out of his mouth, but he was trying!

Pasta - cut up into tiny pieces and given to him with a spoon. I gave a few tiny pieces in each spoonful. Again, some pieces come right out of his mouth. He puts his fingers in his mouth when he eats too, so he pushes some food out and some food back in!

Meatball - cut up into tiny pieces and given with a spoon (one piece per spoonful).

French Toast - cut in very small pieces and put on his highchair tray for him to feed himself.

Real sweet potato and white potato - mashed a little with a spoon and spoon-fed.

blueberry - peeled and smashed

As you can probably tell, I haven't gotten over the insane fear of choking!!

Good luck!!

Re: Tips for starting "real" solids?

Start with something small and really mushy like bananas or avocado.

You can also really cook the heck out of some veggies to get them to the softest texture, like carrots and sweet potato. Then cube them us really small.

ETA: We probably started these real foods at about 8-9 months.

Re: Tips for starting "real" solids?

You know, the fear of choking thing never ends. We started DD on "real" solids around 9 months, and we would just give her softer things first and cut them up super small. When she seemed to master that we would add things like crackers, and chicken. But if you are going to start solids I highly reccomend getting certified in Infant First Aid/CPR. I have had to use it on DD 3 times from choking.Chat Icon

I actually thought of you when daycare told me about it.

They played it off like it was no big deal, but both of them mentioned how he was trying to steal all the food.

So funny! Chat Icon

By the way, I have given DS cheerios cut in half and goldfish (whole). He likes them, but they do make me nervous because they don't dissolve like the puffs do!
