Tips from the Phys Ed Teacher LOL

Send them with sneakers every day. On days that its rainy or snowy send them in their backpack. Most girls in my school wear sneakers with their dresses etc. Its easier for them to play at recess.

If your daughter wants to wear a dress or a skirt please put shorts underneath. In the gym they climb the cargo net, monkey bars, walk on the balance beam and also ride scooters. They also do things like this every day in outside recess. Id hate for your child to get embarrassed :)

Sneaker Types - Just imagine what your child does in school all day. They run and run and run. They jump rope, walk on balance beams, twist, turn etc. Slip on shoes are not the best. In fact Id say they are dangerous. They're cute, but save them for a walk in the mall or something like that. Mary Jane sneakers, Ill try to attach a pic below, are not allowed in the gym. All sneakers need to have a tongue. They should have a securing device like zippers, velcro or laces.

Jewelry is not necessary. They may lose it or break it. They are only allowed to wear stud earring and medical bracelets in the gym. NOTHING else. (I can go through the reasons if youd like)

Find out if they can bring a water bottle to the gym/school. My gymnasium does not have a water fountain. I dont like to have little ones leave the gym for safety reason. I encourage them to all bring their own LABELED water bottle. We do go outside on some hot sunny days and it is not possible to allow a child to walk all the way back to the building for a drink. They will also be upset if everyone else has nice cold water but they dont. Please look into it. Those reusable ones are great b/c if a child loses it, its easier to get it back to them.

LABEL EVERYTHING. Clothing that would come off, hats, water bottles.

Please know we dont sit around trying to find rules to enforce LOL. Ive seen students get injured on jewelry, Ive seen students slip constantly b/c their sneakers have no grip. Just hoping these tips will help someone out.

You are an AWESOME gym teacher and this is great! You should copy it and have the school give it out on the first day! Are you in our school this year?

No, still at Sunrise. I do love it there ;). I do hand out a packet every year at PIN Night but children still come in unprepared and wearing inappropriate sneakers. I have to add that I feel SO bad when a child who really cares about their shuttle run time only has slip on sneakers with little grip. They could have done SO much better if they had athletic sneakers on :(

Re: Tips from the Phys Ed Teacher LOL

I have to laugh when I see what some of the little fashionistas wear in our school.

Thank you for the great tips. I wish all parents would take the advice.

Re: Tips from the Phys Ed Teacher LOL

What do you suggest for a little girl who says she is "ugly" in pants/shorts and sneakers? Not trying to be argumentative, I'm really having this battle with my DD. I bought her pants and sneakers for school, bit I already know it is going to be a battle to get her to wear them on gym days. She ONLY wants to wear dresses. Even now in the summer, I try to get her to put bike shorts under her dresses and she cries and cries saying how ugly she feels. I don't want my 6 year old going to school feeling ugly. Chat Icon

Aww. In my district its actually a requirement for gym. Its not my rule. She can wear skirts and dresses with bike shorts. I dont know about the regular day, but definitely for gym. Id tell her the other girls will too (depending on your district). Ive never had anyone seem to mind, no complaints or anything.

My Dd doesn't love the bike shorts either but she likes the ones with the lace at the bottom bc they are fancy. Have you tried those?

Thank you!!

My kids attend private school and I have to admit I was a bit Chat Icon at the thought of seeing them in their cute preppy uniform and their feet anchored in sneakersChat Icon Chat Iconbut their school requires they wear sneakers ALL day, EVERY day.

I'm a purist and an old throw-back... (many years of Catholic school)... to me a uniform looks Chat Icon without penny loafers or a dress shoe. My dad would have been called at work if I wore sneakers with my uniform but it makes perfect sense from a safety standpoint.

My DD only wears dresses too. Never pants. We like the leggings from Children's place. They are a little tighter so they look more like tights and they have the little lace on the bottom too. There are so many cute sneakers out there. I'm sure she can find ones that she likes. All of DD's shoes are gym appropriate since they go out almost every day for recess too.

Absolutely. Just keep checking how much grip they have. Especially on muddy days when the mud dries on them if they have no grip they often become slippery. Usually when they're older :) I love Puma too :)

My daughter is not a fan of sneakers at all! she loves glittery ballet flats and embellished sandals. When i found out that my daughter has to wear sneakers in order to play on the playground during recess i was worried. She loves twinkle toes by sketchers because of the rhinestones and we just bought these pumas for gym days

pumas

she LOVES them since they are COVERED in sparkles. She was so happy and thrilled with theses sneakers.

hope this helps a little bit !
