TMI but I have to share.....ladies

Ok so this might be TMI. But I took the plunge after years of being like “ewwwww no way” and tried a menstrual cup. Holy cow! Life changing! I was so grossed out by the Thought of it for years, but I decided what’s the harm in trying. There is defintely a learning curve but I literally don’t have to think about my period all day. I put it in in the morning and even on my heavy days, don’t even have to think about it until I get home from work. It’s amazing. I slept with it in last night and first the first time ever didn’t leak or have to change anything in the middle of the night. Is it a little messy to put in and take out, yes but it’s only like once in the morning and once in the evening....tops twice. But it’s no messier than using a pad or cleaning up after a tampon leak. Just wanted to share in case you were like me and were completely like “no F’ing way, never” Life changing. Wanted to share for anyone who was intrigued by it but also completely turned off by it. It’s worth the try!!! It was far worse and messy and gross in my head than it actually is. I don’t think ill ever go back. I’d be happy to answer any questions if you have them.

Re: TMI but I have to share.....ladies

years ago, i thought of using one. what mostly got me curious about it was the idea of not having to constantly having to buy tampons.

my sister uses one. i don't remember which brand. she loves it. she has a heavy cycle and swears by it... and yes, she says the gross factor is negligible.

i ended up not getting one because the IUD i have makes it so that my cycle is virtually non-existent. i don't even wear a tampon any more... it's that little.

not only not buy them, but not have to change them all day! Youll never be caught short supplies while you are out and worry about having supplies on it. I see now why your sister loves them, I just wish I had tried them sooner!

The "gross factor" really is negligible. I had it built up in my head to be WAY worse than it actually is.

Re: TMI but I have to share.....ladies

So you are saying that this cup can hold an entire day's worth of heavy flow?
How is that possible?
Is it big?

This is going to be a very TMI comment.

But when you take it out dont you have to be very careful of not tipping it. Don't you end up with blood all over your hands? Chat Icon Trying to figure out how this is done so carefully? lol

And is there a chance the cup might tilt up in there; then all the blood leaks out?

And where do you empty? Toilet? Then wash it out for next use?

Re: TMI but I have to share.....ladies

I have a few questions...
Are there different brands? What type do you use? Do they come in different sizes? It's made of plastic?
Do you just buy one and wash it and reuse it or are they disposable? Does it come in a multipack in case it gets damaged or has to be thrown out?
How much does it cost?
Thanks!!!!!
I think both pads and tampons are gross anyway so this doesn't sound much worse.

Yes, I am saying that! For my heavy flow at at least. For instance, a Super+ hold on average 13mL, the capacity of the one I have is 30mL. TMI - but I am currently on hour 5 on my heaviest day and still going strong. Its not as big as you think.....for instance, I have the Lena Large and its just over 1.5" in diameter and its just under 2" long. They come smaller too, I dont even feel it though.

You can sleep with it?? Ive stopped using tampons, they were causing me yeast infections. Not crazy about pads. But this is intriguing lol

I sometimes feel that tampons are not great for my vag either to be honest.

Nope. Here is a a TMI answer - they all have "stems" so to remove it, you wiggle the stem back and forth until the cup is at the entrance, then you LIGHTLY squeeze the bottom to break the suction and when you remove, you tip it backwards into the toilet so it empties right into the toilet towards the back and away from your hand. I thought the same thing you did, but its not the case at all (once you get over the learning curve). Then you rinse and re-insert. Even if say you need to empty when you are out, its not necessary to rinse it, I mean after all, its not dirty. Whats on it, was just inside anyway. You can bring a wet paper towel into the bathroom with you if you are in public and want to wipe it down but its not necessary. You can also carry a little thing of wet wipes in your purse if you are out and have your purse anyway. When I am home, I rinse it quick in the sink and then reinsert. The amazing part is, you shouldnt have to change it in public unless you are gone ALLLLLLL day. Maybe on your heaviest day, but even then, it should get you through 6 hours or so if you have the right size.

Regarding leaking, if you have the right fit and inserted it properly is created a "suction" so no, it doesnt move around once it. Once you insert it, you just have to check that it "popped open" bc you insert it folded and that your cervix is in it and then give the "stem" a little tug, if there is resistance, the suction is good. Once you get the hang of using it, you just know if its in right and dont have to do that.

There are SOOOOOO many brands. DivaCup and Luna seem to be the most popular, but I personally settled on the Lena brand. They come is different sizes, yes. You can google menstrual cup comparison chart. Its made of silicone. Yes, you just buy it once and reuse it. It honestly shouldnt get damaged, they are supposed to last up to 10 years if you want. The range in price from about $25-$40.

Yup! I still keep a liner on, JUST in case but havent needed it. When I first started using it, I also kept a liner on during the day in case I inserted incorrectly and understood my flow vs capacity. Just until I "trusted" it.

TMI but I have to share.....ladies

I'm intrigued but I have to say my big concern would be that tampons are wrapped and sterile, but this you're just rinsing and putting back in--it seems like there would be a risk for putting bacteria up there?

You wash your hands first and if you are doing it correctly, it shouldnt come into contact with anything other than your hand and your vagina Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon . Like I wouldnt lay it down on the counter and put it back in or if you drop it in the toilet, wouldnt use it until you sterilized it. But for regular use.....anything coming out on it, was just up in there anyway. Chat Icon

I mean, honestly, the chemicals and etc on a tampon are far worse for your vag than some of your own period blood going back in, LOL. Plus, the other thing to remember, is you arent taking it out and putting it back in all day. Maybe twice on your heaviest days, so there is a good likelihood, youll be home when you need to change it. They also may a bottle of sterilizer for them that you can use to wipe it down with if you are more comfortable with that.

I have been using the DivaCup. It is messy and does leak on my heavy days but its honestly a godsend in comparison to using tampons. And you save so much money!!

Have you tried others with a better fit? Maybe that’s the issue or capacity? If the fit is good and the capacity is enough (or if you need to empty it) it shouldn’t leak. It took me a few tries before I found a good fit for me that didn’t leak.

Totally too much TMI but I would have to use multiple tampons at a time on really heavy days and wear a pad at night to prevent leaks. Is the Lena large bigger than the one I use? I thought they were all kinds the same size.
