TMI question when giving birth...
Can you poop while in labor or pushing? I know it's silly question, but I should warn DH there's gonna be a lot of gross things going on. LOL! I'm sure he knows, but I told him he's the only one allowed in the delivery room besides the Doc and Nurses. I'm sure they've seen it all. Anything else gross that can happen?

Re: TMI question when giving birth...
I had a c-section, but there have been lengthy discussions about it on the boards on & off. Apparently the nurses & Drs are so used to it they clean it before you know it happened. As far as your DH being able to see it, I am not sure. I did warn DH that this could happen if I can VBAC, and he thought it was hilarious

Re: TMI question when giving birth...
Sorry for the TMI, but I watched a birthing video on You tube and it freak me out. One thing I noticed is that area pushing too (sorry nasty). So if anything is in there its going to come out. Thats one reason you are not allowed to eat while in labor.
YUCK!

YIkes! I don't think I can watch any birthing videos b4. Better off they have that curtain or something over my legs b/c I don't want to see what's going on down there. LOL! Take out the video camera AFTER the baby comes out.

Unfortunately, yes. I *recommend* getting an enema as soon as you get into the hospital. My Ob recommended it to me and I had one. It was no biggie but then I didn't have to worry about it during labor.
ETA: You can ask about it. Oh yeah, and an enema is known to help jump start labor.

pooping on the table is NOT a reason why they don't let you eat in a hospital when you are admitted for labor.
THey don't want you eating incase you need to undergo general anethesia and they need to intubate you (breathign tube down throat) there is an old theory that if they don't intubate you properly or quick enough some of the food/liquid can run back from teh stomach and into the trachea and cause aspiration pneumonia. But the thing is you can get aspiration pneumonia even worse if your stomach is empty and you aspirate pure stomach acid, they a combination of stomach acid diluted with food/drink.
A lot of hospitals are starting to re-evaluate allowing women to eat and drink.......
Also, you can store feces in the bowel for up to 2 weeks so unless you plan in not eating for 2 weeks, you can't prevent making poop...... It's part of the process the Dr's and nurses see it everyday and aren't bothered by it.

I had this discussion with DH last night trying to just get him ready for everything and he couldn't stop laughing as well. I never thought about the enema but I will def ask about it!

I heard this too, and i would totally get one instead of pooping during delivery....not that I think I will care at that point, but if I can avoid the public poop I will

Re: TMI question when giving birth...
the reason is because once the water is broken, the baby drops into the bowel area...(watched this part of Laugh & Learn about Childbirth last night)...
YES - if there is anything up there, you WILL poop - but it's something the doc's and nurses have seen more than 800,000 times and it will be gone in a minute. Basically, what the lady said is if they see poop, they know you are pushing the RIGHT way (apparently, there are right and wrong ways to push)..
They do recommend if you are panicing about it to do an enema before going to the hospital to empty the bowels, and as someone suggested before, this can help speed up your labor.

Re: TMI question when giving birth...
Sorry to lurk and jump in but I was in the room when my sister gave birth to her third son recently. I was all prepared for seeing that and I didn't see it at all. I was by her head and looking down to see the baby coming out and didn't see it so I figured she didnt. She later told me that she did but they clean it up so quickly you dont' even notice. and trust me I was looking down their to see the babies head and everything and didn't see her poop!!
Good luck ladies!!!

Re: TMI question when giving birth...
Totally- i was so worried about pooping with my first that i pushed through my face an popped all the blood vessels in my eyes and some in my cheeks- the first pictures were real cute, looked like i faught tyson. The second time- i appologized to the nurses in advance, and they said- there is really no way you can avoid it- if there is something in there, its coming out- and happens all the time. They are professionals- poop is really nothing to Dr's and nurses. i've come to accept that. DH doesnt care either.

Re: TMI question when giving birth...
One thing you need to realize is that you push the baby out with those same muscles as you push out poop. I spent an hour pushing the wrong way because there was no way I wanted to have an accident on the table.
As for the enema, which I was going to opt for but there was no time, be aware that it could make things even messier depending on when it's given. and while it probably goes without saying, I'll say it anyway - you should not be giving yourself an enema without your doctor knowing.
As they say, poop happens - and afterwards, no one cares. It's all about the baby.

Re: TMI question when giving birth...
My sister recently told me I pooped on the table. Oh well. It happens. She said watching the episiotomy was grosser though.
And the nurses will look at, touch and clean your hoo ha for you multiple times. It seems crazy to me, but to them, just seemed like something they do a zillion times a week.

I couldn't see anything going on down there. I heard about it in detail though after the fact from DH and my sister.
I was pretty much in la-la land though from the epidural.

You won't poop on the baby.... your rectum is below the vagina

Re: TMI question when giving birth...
My doctor actually told me during labor that he wanted to see a bm cause then he knows I am pushing correctly. Honestly, its inevitable. They don't care, and you shouldn't either. Believe me, it will be the furthest thing from your mind!

Re: TMI question when giving birth...
I did my internship in L&D- and while i was there, pretty much everyone pooped. It's really doesn't even phase you- there's chucks underneathe you and the poop is gone as it happens. Your baby is not going to be delivered into a pile. I've heard people mention the enema thing- i guess that's up to you and your Dr, but its not something i would do. Especially if you never had one before- i'm not going to try new things with my rectum right before i put pressure on it like i never have before. jmo.
