TMI questions about colostrum/breastfeeding...
Sorry for the TMI questions, but I am due in 2 weeks and am freaking out with all the questions I have...
Ever since about week 20 of my pregnancy my nipples have had this weird white/amber-colored crystalline dried stuff on them. I can actually pick the stuff off but then my nipple becomes very dry and cracked looking. I showed my Dr. and she said it's just a normal part of pregnancy and to leave it alone.
Well, now 2 weeks away from delivery I'm wondering if this "stuff" will effect my ability to breastfeed? My nipples just look so weird...
Also, is colostrum present immediately for EVERY woman? I have this fear that I won't be able to feed my child.
Thanks everyone for any advice/help you can give me

Re: TMI questions about colostrum/breastfeeding...
I don't think you'll be negatively impacted because of the stuff on your nipples, but if you're uncomfortable with the dryness you may want to use nursing cream now because it may get worse once the baby's here- they eat so often in those first few weeks.
I had colostrum right away- I know most women nurse almost as soon as the cord is cut, but for me I think it was about an hour after she was born. And I know she got it because she spit it all up later on!

I think it might be, but when I squeeze nothing happens....it's all so perplexing

I would hope not. If simply squeezing made you spray you'd be a mess! Manually expressing breastmilk involves a whole lot of work...

At this point, since you haven't had your baby yet, i bet its colostrum. Same thing happened to me, i had yellowish crusty stuff there for a few weeks before i had DS. I had never had that before, pretty sure thats what it is!

Re: TMI questions about colostrum/breastfeeding...
Probably dried up colostrum... you should start using the lansinoh cream to soothe now, because they will still get sore once the baby starts sucking in the beginning... better off starting now than to wait until its really painful (and make sure you take it with you to the hospital!!)!!! Good luck!

It does sound like dried colostrum to me also. I don't think it's going to affect your nursing at all.
I agree with the previous poster and buy Lanolin cream now & start putting it on if your nipples are dry. They will dry out even more when you're nursing.
I had colustrum from the start.

Yep, I had the same thing before DD was born. I wouldn't worry. I had no problems BFing.

Thank you so much everyone! I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one with this weird nipple thing going on. I'll def go out and buy the cream today.

Not at all. I had the same strange thing when I was pregnant. And my milk took a few days to come in so I had to supplement while BF'ing, but it came in full force and I had no problems! HTH

ITA. If it is even the slightest bit uncomfortable, use a warm water compress to remove any bits & moisturize now.
I had colostrum right away- I know most women nurse almost as soon as the cord is cut, but for me I think it was about an hour after she was born.
I also had colostrum right away, but I did not have enough milk to satisfy DS, so I had to supplement with formula while I was in the hospital. I also asked the hospital for a breast pump, so that I could measure when & how much milk I was finally producing. Since I was in the hospital for 5 days, I was able to coax my milk to come before I went home.
