To Stain or not to stain? Floors
We have hardwood floors and just rec'd a quote...pretty decent since it is a big area to get refinished. If we decide to stain its an extra $200.
Im not sure if necessary.
This is one room getting done. The floor looks like crap now since DH let everything land on there due to house construction. So they are getting sanded down.

Did you put like polyuerthane (sp?) or anything down after you sanded?

Re: To Stain or not to stain? Floors
when you sand them they are going to become a lot lighter than what they are now. They will go back to their natural color. So if you want lighter floors then don't stain them. I prefer darker floors so I vote for staining them.

I got stain (minwax golden oak) and water based satin poly.
LOVE IT! I prefer the stain look!

Yes. First we put down a wood sealer and then 4 coats of polyurethane. We did them ourselves. When you sand them, yes, they will get lighter because you take off the current finish. But when you put on the new finish they will get darker again. If you like a really dark look though, you will have to stain them.

Your floors look great! We are having ours done shortly and we told them we wanted stain and the water based poly and they recommended we don't do that. They said it doesn't bond well together (or something like that). Did your floor guy say anything about it?

Re: To Stain or not to stain? Floors
Ours are being done now and we didn't get the stain. I don't think the stain matters really, it just gives you a different look. The number of coats of polyurethane and the quality of the poly used are probably more important if you want the floors to last.
We went with a natural look mainly because we are just having the bedrooms refinished and the downstairs and steps are natural.

Re: To Stain or not to stain? Floors
Oh, I just noticed your last post. All of the three floor places we called recommended oil based poly. They said it will last longer than water-based, and adheres better if you do want a stain.
How true this is, I don't know, but that was what they all told us.

Thank you!! Yes, they are all oak. We used the sealer first, and then the water based poly. It had hardly any smell, compared to the oil-based ones.

My floor guy never said this, has been in the biz for many years.
I do admit though that moisture can seep into the floor if it sits for too long. I dont know if that is related to the water poly or not.
I never heard that. I wonder what his reason is.

I would agree oil is a better seal. But for me, i didnt want the toxicity that is associated with the smell of oil based poly, so i went with water. Less durable, yes, but safer for environment from what I read.
