To sum up my deleted post - cereal and babies
LADIES - this issue is done, really - I just put it back up because people said it would be helpful for future moms...
I edited this because what tends to happen is the post gets answered over and over again, after it has resolved itself, but for future moms - I asked about giving barley cereal to my EIGHT week old baby.
EIGHT weeks (not six) - if you ladies recall, I asked about CIO when he was 6 wks old! I am never without controversy!
DH gave him about 2 tiny tastes of it last night. He liked it, but made a funny face because of the texture. He pushed it around with his tongue (which, according to one of the websites that this post linked to - says that means they are ready! See quote below) and then slept that night for 4-5 hrs in a row. I asked if it was coincidental, which I think it was.
He showed no reactions other than an extra poop or 2 today, which also could be coincidental because he has not stopped eating (formula) all day!!!
As everyone said, information is also changing.
I doubt if we gave Cailen the following: diabetes, IBS, and Crohn's Disease.
I have IBS. I don't remember if I was given Barley cereal at 8 wks old.
If Cailen makes it thru his lifetime without needing a shrink, I will be very surprised.
Once your infant is between four and six months of age, she may start showing signs of readiness for solid foods. These signs include being able to support her own head, having good tongue thrust (can push food out of her mouth) and showing interest in the foods you are eating. When you feel your baby is ready and your pediatrician gives the go ahead, you can then start feeding her rice cereal, by mixing the cereal flakes with her breastmilk or formula. The familiar taste will help her accept the new food and rice cereal tends to be less allergy-provoking than some other foods.

Re: Barley cereal = full night sleep?
They say not to give cereal to help them sleep through the night.
I think it is controversial actually- our parents tell you that they would put cereal in our bottles but now they say their little digestive systems can not handle it and giving cereal too early causes all sorts of problems later.
I put cereal in dd's bottle starting at 2 months old because the ped told us to for her reflux. I was nervous about it because I did some research and saw it was bad but our ped said we were using it like medicine, not the ideal but she needed it.
I would do some research then make your decision.
Also, they say start with rice, not barley.
Look here
and here
Hope this helps!

I wouldn't give cereal at 6 weeks old without checking with your ped. first.

Re: Barley cereal = full night sleep?
The only time cereal is recommended in a child that young is if your child has reflex and it should be approved by your doctor. The recommended age for cereal is between 4-6 months and some doctors are even recommeding it closer to six months. I think 2 months old is way too young.
There have been studies that babies that get cereal 2 young have a higher incidence of celiac disease.

Re: Barley cereal = full night sleep?
It's an old wives tale that solids help them to sleep through the night. DD is over 9 months old and still doesn't but she loves her food. As with the other posters, I would check with your ped. before I started cereals at a young age.

Me neither...also they say to start off with rice because it is easier to digest. 6 weeks is very early. I'd call my ped.

Re: Barley cereal = full night sleep?
I agree with the others, I would not give cereal to a baby so small. His digestive system is not ready to digest anything other than breastmilk or formula. It might cause longer term problems. Please be careful.

I wouldnt give cereal at 6 weeks old either.
He's 8 wks
I'll ask my ped. this Friday when he goes for shots. The amt DH gave him was so negligible, less than a tsp and most was pushed out with his tongue!
He wound up waking up after I posted! He was up every 3 hrs (he goes 1 extra hr)
Once again, I have to wonder: how did children of past generations survive? They went to sleep on their bellies, with covers, bumpers, and with bellies full of barley cereal!!!

They went to sleep on their bellies, with covers, bumpers, and with bellies full of barley cereal!!! and now most of us have IBS, Crohns disease, Colitis, digestive problems. My ped said to wait till 6 months and I do believe there is truth in that- every dr. is different and will say different things, do what you feel is comfortable after getting advice from your ped.

Unfortunately, not all those babies survived , hence the new guidelines. Who knows -- when our babies grow-up they may be telling them to do the exact opposite of what they're telling us now.

Re: ...
4 months was tough enough, I can't imagine 6 weeks. Bella slept through the night before she started cereal.
My question is though, why do you keep asking for advice and then taking your post down shortly after?? after you get conflicting feedback too? if everybody did that, we would have no posts left.

I agree, leave your posts up! Even if you think you have all the answers you need, some of us still can respond..:)
In my situation, I actually did give DS some rice ceral at 2 months. He was spitting up horribly at this age and I thought it might work. It didn't for us, but others I know it did help...
My mom told me she started each and every one of us on cereal around 2-3 months (with a spoon!?). We slept like champs, we are all healthy...
I think every generation you learn something though. Today there is TOO MUCH information out there, 20 years ago there wasn't enough, lol. Vicious cycle i think! I slept on my belly, was formula fed, cereal at 2 months and had toys in my crib. How I am still here is a wonder! Lol.

I agree with you here. It is insane the difference in what we are told vs. what my parents did with me. I slept on my belly, had juice and water before I was two months old and I am 100% fine, no problems with my teeth, etc.
My ped told me to put DS on his stomach for naps as long as DH or I were in the room with him. I love it b/c I can get a nice nap out of him, but at the same time I am a maniac because he is sleeping on his belly, knowing full well that I slept like that every night!
I had a cousin die of SIDS when I was five(my earliest memory, actually ). And I am not going to put how he was sleeping because it would freak too many people out, but the bottom line is that you can follow all of the rules (my aunt did) and still have problems. You have to follow your doctor's advice and your own intuition.

That's how you know he isn't ready, by him pushing it back out with his tongue.
I agree, so much has changed from when we were little and my mom is still stuck in the "old" days when it comes to certain things (like a newborn sleeping with a plush blanket..she thinks THAT's okay!).

Re: ...
I guess I am the only one...
I gave Ryan cereal at 5 weeks and it worked wonders. THe formula was not enough for him, he wanted to eat ALL the time. Once I gave it to him, he slept through the night and was happier. He has no issues now and if his system could not handle it, I would have known (diarrhea, vomiting, etc). This study about cereal creating problems later on is weird, I know plenty of people who have given their babies cereal and have had no issues. If their tummy can't handle it, they will let you know when you feed them.

Your son isn't quite old enough to develop the problems that cereal is said to "possibly" cause LATER in life. Diabetes is one of those problems.

Is there a proven link between cereal at an early age and diabetes later on?? I don't know about that, have you read that?
A large factor of adult onset diabetes is weight. Not sure about any other causes...

Yup, there sure is. If you google it you can find further info on it. I tried to find it on the AAP site, but their site is so confusing. Quite a few references come up in a basic search though. There is a whole list of reasons to not start solids in babies under 6 mos (according to the AAP), diabetes just being one of them.
