To those that find the word "redneck" funny
Redneck, in modern usage, predominantly refers to a particular stereotype of people who may be found in many regions of the United States or Canada. The word can be used either as a pejorative or as a matter of pride, depending on context.
Usage of the term redneck generally differs from hick and hillbilly, because rednecks reject or resist assimilation into the dominant culture, while hicks and hillbillies theoretically are isolated from the dominant culture. In this way, the term redneck is similar to the word cracker.
eta: It is one of those "words"...if I call myself a redneck its fine. If you call me a redneck, it can come off wrong.

Yea, I'm not really seeing how us liking country music and NASCAR (both extremely popular) make us Rednecks. Yet, I hear it all the time from people!

Re: To those that find the word "redneck" funny
I am so used to it at this point. Most people don't realise what it means.
DH prefers "Appalachian American"
BTW, I read somewhere that the term redneck actually comes from early america when only the wealthy could afford paper collars. Shirts then did not come with collars like they do now, and most wealthy people did not change their shirts everyday, but rather only their collar.
The worker class or non-elite could not afford paper collars for everyday wear, and would get sunburnt while working without a collar, getting a red neck.
Just a little piece of random trivia for ya.

The origin of the term cracker was derived from the days of slavery where a slave owner was called a cracker due to their use of the whip (crack of the whip). I don't see how these two terms are similiar at all.
All words have a double entendre (sp?)nowadays. Happy and Rude.

We went through that on another thread. That's not the origin of the word.

Re: To those that find the word "redneck" funny
I grew up in Delaware. Surrounded by people who PROUDLY referred to themselves as rednecks.
One FFA member (that's future farmer's of America to you city folk) even had "Proud to be a Redneck" tatooed on his arm.
But I remember when our rival school had a banner made on homecoming with some Redneck something or other on it there was a HUGE fight because our guys felt redneck was a "bad word".
I never understood how it was okay for them to call themselves rednecks proudly, but to take offense when others did.

In general, I think if you call yourself something, you're inviting others to call you that too. Same thing with the N word and the F word. It's either ok or it isn't

I hear you but it would never be okay for me to use the N word. Whether I am saying it to my African American BFF or saying it to be mean.

Yeah, that's why it makes me sick to my stomahc when people use it as a term of endearment or greeting. Thought I guess they could be trying to adopt it and turn it positive like the gay community did with the word "queer." it still bothers me.
