Toddler moms - transitioning to a bed

When you transitioned your toddler to a bed, did you leave the door closed at night, or leave it open so that your little munchkin can get up and roam as he/she feels fit when he/she wakes up?

I'm a little nervous about the trouble Alex could get into, so for now, we're keeping the door closed, but what do we do when she learns how to open the door by herself? (which by the way, she is very close to doing).

I am not at that stage yet but what about putting a baby gate at her door that way you keep her door open a little but she can't roam the house.

Jenna's room has a pocket door, we keep it open and have installed a gate so she can't roam the house or go downstairs

Re: Toddler moms - transitioning to a bed

I just put Alison into a bed and I keep the door closed until I got to bed then I open it and put a gate at the door so she can't get out. It's been working well

Hmmm, good ideas, but unfortunately I don't trust Alex with a gate - she has learned too many times how to open them, or just use her brute strength to push it down Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Toddler moms - transitioning to a bed

Alex is a lot like my Jack...spirited! Gates did not work. He scaled them at 18 months. Door handles were an easy conquest. We therefore had to put a doorknob cover on the inside of his room otherwise every night I had a child staring at me at 2am in my bedroom!

I had posted about this a while ago and many people disagreed with using the lock on the inside of his room, but that is what works for us. I just don't have one of those children where I say "Don't get out of bed until Mommy or Daddy comes to get you."

I had to move Jack to a toddler bed at 19 months since he was a crib jumper also!

We put Jared in his big boy bed, closed the door and put a gate up as well.

Since Talia learned to jump from her crib I babyproofed the doorknob INSIDE her room so she can't open it and get out.

Re: Toddler moms - transitioning to a bed

we havent put D in a bed yet but she is a climber and Im sure that day will be coming soon....she knows how to open the doors herself so I will probably put one of those baby proifing door knob covers on the inside knob ....
