Re: Tomorrow Is My 20 Week Sono..***UPDATE** WE'RE BACK
glad to hear that all is well!!!!!
about what they're calling a "soft marker", there is some (but not too strong) evidence that seeing that spot on the heart is associated with down's syndrome - hence the term "soft" marker.
this happened with my DS; they saw a spot during the 20wk ultrasound and also noticed that his heart rate decelerated briefly during the study. they ended up sending me for an echo of the baby's heart, which came out completely NORMAL. the cardiologist told us that this type of "spot" is not uncommon, and that it is usually no big deal. he felt that the whole down's syndrome link was overstated.
my DS came out as a healthy little boy - i'm sure your little one will too

That sounds fine! Soft markers are just that- soft signs that there could be a problem, not definitive. Its probably just a calcuim deposit- much more common.

Re: Tomorrow Is My 20 Week Sono..***UPDATE** WE'RE BACK
I was told the same thing when I had my sono with DS -- they saw a spot on the heart that was a soft marker for downs. It was called an echogenic focus. I saw the high risk dr. and in the end it was nothing and DS is perfectly healthy

Re: Tomorrow Is My 20 Week Sono..***UPDATE** WE'RE BACK
There are certain markers that can be seen via ultrasound that are considered "soft markers" for Down Syndrome...Short femur bone, curved pinky, space between first and second toe, lack of nasal bone, fat pad at the back of the neck, heart defects, cysts, etc etc etc....
All of these "soft markers" are seen within the general population. Just b/c your child has one of them doesnt mean the baby has Down Syndrome. Lots of babies have minor heart defects in utero that later correct themselves either before or after birth...Atrial Septal Defects and Ventricular Septal Defects are 2 that come to mind.
Essentially the doctors are telling you that they see something on the babies heart that they want to take a closer look at...b/c children with Down Syndrome have a greater incidence of heart defects than the general population they have made this spot into a soft marker. But your baby only has 1 soft marker. I have yet to see a single baby with Down Syndrome who would only have 1 soft marker that could be seen via ultrasound....and Ive seen a lot of babies with Down Syndrome.
Even my daughter, who is Mosaic, would have had 4 visible soft markers for Down Syndrome..had they been looking for it 15 years ago...(Short femur bone, space between 1st and 2nd toe, fat pad, short nasal bone) And when she was born she didnt fit the criteria as a baby with Down Syndrome...
I hope this has been of some help. Feel free to FM me any time if you have any more questions...

My daughter had that spot on her heart too. She is completely healthy & normal. It's a very soft marker & I was told not to worry about it unless they found a few other markers too.

Re: Tomorrow Is My 20 Week Sono..***UPDATE** WE'RE BACK
I am in the same situation as you. I had my 20 week ultrasound last week and was told there was a "white spot" or echogenetic focus on the fetal heart. The Dr told me he had to mention that it was a soft marker for downs syndrome but since all of my labs came back normal, my risk was very low. He didn't offer us an Amnio because he did not feel it was necessary, and I am pretty sure I would have refused it anyway. I truly wish this was never even mentioned to me because now I feel as though the next 20 weeks are going to be ridden with anxiety and worries. The thought of something being wrong hadnt even crossed my mind before this because everything was going so well. I find myself playing out what would happen if there was something wrong over and over in my head.
The fetal cardiologist said that these things often clear themselves up before or shortly after delivery, but I've found myself so upset that Im not even looking forward to all the fun things like registering or my shower anymore because I can't stop thinking that something might be wrong.
