Tongue tied
Jack's tongue doesn't come out of his mouth...the litte piece of skin underneath goes to the end of his tongue (hard to explain)
So, my ped says we will do something about this in a few months, I was wondering if anyone's DC has had this - and how they take care of it? We have our first appt. on Thurs w/ the ped so I guess he will tell us everything then.

Re: Tongue tied
They usually snip the skin. It's better for them to do it younger because once they're older, I think it requires a hospital stay. It's not an uncommon issue, though

Thanks - do they numb the tongue?

Re: Tongue tied
Ryan had it. When he was 6 weeks old they snipped it. They do numb it but it still hurt him. You are better off taking care of it now. They told my sil she didn't have to and when my niece was 8 they had to do it. It healed pretty quick and he was smiling in the car on the way home. It hurt me more than him. Good Luck!!
If you have any ?'s yuo can FM me.

Re: Tongue tied
My DD had it done.
Her case wasn't severe but if you wait it can possibly interfere with speech development later on. Our ped referred us to an ENT who specializes in pediatrics. It is an in-office procedure when they are that young. It's a quick snip (they made us leave the room). Most babies cry out of the fear of the nurse holding them moreso than any pain. I'd get it done asap.
Their frenulum (that's the term) will appear a bit white for a day or two afterward.
My DD was taking her bottle not ten minutes later in the waiting room. She was 100% right after. Just took a long nap that afternoon from the excitement.
FM me if you'd like the name of the doc we used. He was excellent.

Re: Tongue tied
This is good to know/read...my son is also "tongue tied" and no one suggested having it cut. I will ask about this at his appt. next week for sure now!
THANK YOU.

Re: Tongue tied
My niece and nephew were both tounge tied. I'm not sure why my siister waited so long, but they had the procedure done about 2 years ago (when they were 11 and 8). It was a quick procedure that didn't require an overnight stay. They both actually did great with it!

Re: Tongue tied
It is hereditary. I had it when I was born and back them they cut it in the hospital before parents even took babies home. DS was born with this too. The regular pediatrician no longer cuts it, he will have to go to a specialist. Also, they do not cut it unless it becomes a problem with feeding or with speech (and they don't even cut it anymore, they cortirize it now). DS is feeding ok so now I will have to wait until he older and if it becomes a problem with speech (which it will) at that time my ped. will send us to a specialist. I believe a pedicatric ENT dr does it.

Why would you want to wait and see if your DC has a problem speaking and then cut it?!?!

Re: Tongue tied
DS was 9 days old when he had it done. He was having latching trouble and they said it was better to have it taken care of sooner rather than later. They didn't numb him at all, just put a piece of gauze on his tongue, held it steady with a clamp, and then crushed his frenulum and snipped it. If they do it right, it doesn't even bleed. DS screamed for about 2 seconds, then he was fine.

Six weeks.
And it is NOT true that you can only get it done if it interferes with feeding or speech (at a later age). My DD had no problems feeding but as an educator I was very concerned about possible speech problems in years to come.
Docs and insurance company had no problem with it being done and it was not a severe case.

No services should be needed if this is taken care of when they are very little.

Re: Tongue tied
My son had it and no one said anything until he started receiving speech therapy when he was a little over 2. I didn't notice because it's just not something that I was looking for. Bad I know! That's when he got the surgery done to remove the skin. His was really bad too. Now he has a normal tongue and doesn't stop talking!
Dr. Max April did his and was very great. I have heard nothing but good things about him from others.
Good luck, he'll be fine!

Re: Tongue tied
Thanks everyone. I feel better knowing that this is a pretty common procedure. My mind was getting the best of me and I was starting to freak out.
I def. want it done soon - I don't want to wait and see what happens bc I don't want him to deal with speech issues as he grows up. I'll see who my ped. recommends on Thursday.
