Tonsils

Anyone have their tonsils out later in life? Say like, in your late 20's? I've read that it's a lot worse for adults than it is for children. I can't take the sore throats and swallowing issues anymore! Can anyone tell me what to expect?

Re: Tonsils

I had my tonsils removed almost 4.5 yrs ago. I was 24yrs old. Now bear in mind this is MY story, i'm sure most others have had completely different experiences.
After surgery, I was in some major pain. All they gave me was tylenol with codeine for pain. (liquid form since i couldnt swallow) they said make sure you stay very very hydrated and try to eat soft things like mashed potatoes(basically like soup) pastina etc.
I couldnt even drink. I couldnt speak. I couldnt sleep. I'd wake up gasping for air. I ended up in the hospital for dehydration twice. I was MISERABLE for over 3 weeks.
That's my HONEST story.
But i have to tell you that it was the BEST BEST decision I've ever made. Those few weeks of what felt like hell, are nothing compared to have much better I feel now. I haven't had a sore throat since Chat Icon

I know many others that have had them out later in life and had a recovery time of only a few days!!! I was jealous lol

I know it sounds terrible but afterwards it's the best thing.

Re: Tonsils

I had my tonsilectomy at 20 (10 years ago so my recollection may be blurry). I was having repeat strep infections at college and my tonsils had abscessed.

I went to a Dr. in Syosset that was recommended by my PCP. He told me that I'd be fine with tylenol with codeine for pain. A few days before my surgery, a friend told me that they had a stronger painkiller. I called the dr. and his office staff told me that he does not perscribe a stronger painkiller unless he feels they are necessary. THAT did not go over well with me but the surgery was already scheduled.

Surgery at LIJ Children's Hospital (I wasn't a minor but was still was young) was fine.

The first time I took the painkillers at home I threw up. Throwing up was very painful and not good for my healing---obviously the codeine did not agree with me. Somehow my stomach learned to tolerate it but I was still in a great deal of pain, I'd recommend asking for something stronger. I remember drinking so much Gatorade at that time that I can't really drink it anymore. I also ate a lot of apple sauce and warm foods. Graduating to noodles in butter was very exciting. Since I was in college, I weighted a bit more than I should have at the time and the whole experience made me lose about 10 pounds that I was pretty excited about.

I was in bed for almost a week, and home for about a week and a half.

Yes I failed to mention that since I was taking the codeine with no food in my stomach, I did vomit also. obviously NOT something you want to do after throat surgery, and i really feel that prolonged my healing.

Weight loss was awesome. 16lbs in 3 weeks. Too bad I gained double back once I could eat normal food again Chat Icon

all in all i say go for it (even though it sounds terrible) best decision

Re: Tonsils

I had my tonsils out when I was 23 because I would get strep or tonsilitis 2-3 times a year. It was a much tougher recovery than for kids. After 2 weeks, I finally started to feel back to normal. The whole process s*cked but is definitely worth it because I haven't had strep or tonsilitis since (that was almost 4 yrs ago)

Re: Tonsils

I got them out a few years ago at the age of 30. I didn't think it was that bad. I remember giving up on the pain meds within one day because they upset my stomach. And I do remember my husband getting mad because he thought he would get a week of me being quiet. But I kept on talking. Chat Icon

Re: Tonsils

I had mine out when I was 25 and it stunk. I think the pain I had was more from that they had to pop my jaw to get in my mouth because it didn't open wide enough.

I am allergic to codeine, so I got some kind of percoset, which doesn't make me sick.

But it was the best decision I ever made because I haven't had strep since.
