Totally freaking out!!!!! Food related

Tonight DH made burgers and hot dogs. The hot dogs were soy dogs, but I'm not 100% sure if those are nitrate free or not.

Anyway, I bit into my burger and it was bright red on the edge...not cooked through! I spit it out right away but am convinced that some juices (trace amount as they may be) were possibly swallowed. I rinsed my mouth out with water repeatedly. Still I'm convinced that this is going to hurt the baby...or me (food poisoning is not fun for mommy either). Despite nuking the rest of the burger until it was about to burst into flames, I could not bring myself to eat the rest of it. Should I be worried?

Also, how does one know if there are nitrates in something? One of the ingredients is sodium nitrite, but DH says it's not the same thing. I have looked on regular hot dog packages and it's listed as nitrates clear as day. Thing is I had a regular hot dog yesterday at everyone's urging since I never eat them. Now I'm doublely nervous and so convinced I am going to hurt the baby.

I don't think you need to freak out. So many people, including myself, have eaten foods that are on the "no-no" list. So many people eat far worse and have given birth to perfectly healthy babies . . .

I think you are ok too. Don't stress out. Think of all of the bad things that other women do while they are pregnant. Drinking, drugs, etc. I think you are fine since you spit the burger out & the HD was cooked.

Yah I agree w/ everyone, I think you are fine. You spit out the burger and even if had not...it would have been ok for that bite. As for the hot dogs...if you see my post I had one last night and got sick - not b/c it is bad for you - b/c it was probably greesy lol.....I have eaten a handful of hot dogs preggo already and I am sure it is fine....I also had cold cuts...everything in moderation...don't worry :)

Re: Totally freaking out!!!!! Food related

I remember once I ate some undercooked chicken while I was pregnant and I got so upset. My babies were fine, and so was I.

As for the nitrates, I don't think that soy hot dogs would have nitrates, its a preservative they put into meat.
I always buy nitrate free hot dogs, nitrates aren't really good for anyone.

You are fine....and totally overreacting IMO....
You or the baby are not going to be hurt by a hot dog or a small bite of undercooked burger.
I eat my burgers medium rare - even while preggo and have had plenty of hotdogs....

It's not worth stressing over...really.

I eat hot dogs all the time. My OB is fine with it. Don't worry.

About the beef --- how many people eat rare steak and never get sick. The chances are really small. Relax.

Ditto, with both of my kids I ate medium rare steaks, burger etc. Calm down you'll do more damage with your nerves than the itty bitty teeny bite of undercooked beef and a hot dog

My dc, I'm convinced, is made out of bologna, steak (medium rare) and hot dogs and dc is COMPLETELY healthy and fine.

You are FINE! The stress that you are causing by stressing about this is far worse than what you just "maybe" ate.

Relax - breathe - and enjoy your pregnancy.
