Totally Irrational Birth Worry
Okay - so i've been seeing more and more comments lately about a catheter....is that 100% necessary during and after labor????
I just know i've had 3 surgeries in my adult life (gall bladder removal, ovarian cyst removal and spinal fusion surgery) - and every time i've woken up from them - i've FREAKED about the catheter and have wanted it out IMMEDIATELY. I don't know why - i just do not like anything, um, up there (same reason i've never used tampons)... I have never, ever been able to 'go' with one in either...i always freak in the recovery room and get it taken out and i get helped to the bathroom if i need to go...
I know this is an irrational thing of mine...but is it absolutely necessary???

Re: Totally Irrational Birth Worry
If you get an epidural or have a c-section you will get a catheter.
If you deliver vaginally with no epidural unless you can't pee a few hours after the delivery normally you don't have one!

I'm not sure about a vag delivery either. But with a C/S I would think it is necessary since you can't feel anything from the waist down.

Re: Totally Irrational Birth Worry
I had two vaginal births and never had a catheter. I think that you only get one with a section but I am not sure.

Re: Totally Irrational Birth Worry
you girls rock my socks off.... thank you for the quick replies!
i have a gut feeling i'll be having a c-section. I'm VERY likely going to fail the GD test...but we'll see (stranger things have happened).
In some ways - i'd prefer that - simply because while i know the recovery isn't the SAME from a laparascopy, i've had two of them and recovered from them just fine...so i'd be more 'prepared' to recover from that i THINK...
but in that case, the 'catheter' worry becomes huge... Maybe if i can't feel it at all though - i'd be okay....
i'll definitely have this on my list to talk to the doc about on the 29th...(my chances for a c-section and catheter thing)...

For the most part if you are getting a catheter they put it in after you get the epidural for both vaginal and section births.
Ive been told that if you don't feel it when its being put in, your body gets use to it and its not so uncomfortable when you aren't numb anymore!

Hey Jess, I had one too right after the epidural. Couldn't feel a darn thing it's fine. Plus you can't see it either over the ginormo belly!!!

Re: Totally Irrational Birth Worry
I had one for my c-section with DS.
The put it in after my spinal, I didnt feel a thing.
The next day, it was still in and a bit uncomfortable (totally bareable) and I couldnt wait to have it taken out.
I felt a slight pinch, when removing it- but it was quick and easy!

PS -IF you do wind up with GD, it doesn't mean C section either! So, try not to worry!

Oh wow, I didn't know this! I guess though by the time I am actually in labor I probably won't care??!!
I HAVE heard though the epidural hurts like a mofo going in. And OFTEN wears off..........

Jess, I know we spoke about it. GD has increased my chances of a c section, but I was already at a high risk for having one. You can totally still have a vaginal delivery!

i honesltly think i'd prefer a c section....(posted about it above)...i'm not worried about that part at all...it's all about the catheter! That's how silly i know this is!

Not that I've given birth yet, so I don't really know. But I'm sure there will be so much other stuff going on that you won't even give the catheter a second thought!

Re: Totally Irrational Birth Worry
Honestly I am more concerned at this point about how DH is going to react with everything he sees going on with my body that day. He has already told everyone he's "worried for me".

Re: Totally Irrational Birth Worry
Honestly, I went though labor and ended up with a c-section. I am sure I must have gotten one at some point but I have absolutely no recollection of them putting it in or taking it out so I am assuming that out of everything that went on in those 24 hours it was probably the least traumatic

The epidural needle was easy as pie!! The numbing shot is the one you feel. Honestly, the contractions were more painful than either of the needles. I didn't want an epidural, but wound up with one, I couldn't take the contractions. Staying still while getting the epidural is hard, but your nurse helps so much!
As for the cathader, I didn't fee a thing bc i was all numb and in my happy place from feeling no more pain.

I agree. If you have GD & follow the diet (which is essential to your & your child's health so I can't see that you wouldn't follow it), there is no reason to even worry about it.
I do understand freaking out about things attached to you. While I had no epi, I was freaked out by the IV & that was just to give me an antibiotic.

Re: Totally Irrational Birth Worry
If you get an epidural, you will have one inserted likely after the epidural is done. I was worried about mine too, but it didn't bother me at all while it was in or even while it was out (or taken out). I have had one during another surgery in the past, btw and didn't know I was getting one during that surgery.
Really, it was no biggie.

In my experience, the epidural didn't hurt at all. I told the dr who did it that I have had more painful paper cuts in my lifetime, and they all laughed in the OR when I said that. True though.
