Totally rude question
So today at my interview I was asked my SAT score. And she followed it with "may I ask? Why did you end up going to Hofstra?"
I used to get asked that all the time AT Hofstra. It's really rude. But I think the way I answered I may have insulted HER alma mater, because I said at my HS everyone was obsessed with getting into HArvard, but I had nothing to prove, I wanted to go to the program that was the right fit for me. Knowing she;'s from Boston, and spent her college years there, there's a good chance she went to Harvard
ETA: SAT score is totally job related. I was mioffed about the implication that Hofstra is not a good school and with my SAT score I should have gone somewhere "better"

How random....SAT score? How old are you? Kind of a moot point at this stage...

I should add that SAT score is a job related question. The rude question was the implication that with that high a score, why did I go to a crappy school like Hofstra

Re: Totally rude question
I get that all the time when I state I went to Baruch. I got into Brown & Columbia and didn't go b/c I couldn't AFFORD to go. I got an amazing education from Baruch and I don't regret it one bit.
Undergrad doesn't matter IMHO - and no matter what school you go to for undergrad - as long as you DO WELL - that's all that matters!

I 100% agree. I got into UPenn (wait-listed at Brown) and went to Manhattan College because I could not afford to go to Penn. I received a significant scholarship at MC. I had the BEST time at MC and loved every minute of it! I am so happy that I saved my $$ because I went on to law school which is quite expensive. And, there were at least 10 people I knew in my law school class who all went to Penn. So, I probably would have wound up at the exact same place!

Re: Totally rude question
it's completely job related because it's at an SAT Prep company developing curriculum. For that, you'd better have had a good score!

Re: Totally rude question
When I interview for attorney positions, I literally get that question EVERY SINGLE TIME. I had the opportunity to go to a top ten school, but I specifically chose the school that I went to (which isn't all that bad, mind you) for financial reasons (can't beat $3000 in tuition for a law school education! ) and for its trial program. And yet, I found myself having to give that explanation on EVERY SINGLE interview.
It's rude and presumptious, but they have every right to ask...

Re: Totally rude question
Wasn't the point of the interview to get the job?
If you decided based on that question not to work for the person that's a different situation. Some interviewers put you in a difficult situation (defending your alma mater) to see how you'd respond.
Good luck either way!

I really think it was a snobbery kind of thing, not a stress interview tactic. I get asked all the time. In college, one of the questions they ask in "getting to know you" freshman year is what HS you went to and I had professors and advisers asking me why I ende dup at Hofstra after they heard what HS I went to. They're basically putting down the place where they work. I feel like it's a really belittling thing. Did I have a Harvard SAT score? Yes. Do I have a HArvard mentality? No. I wanted to be able to create my own major and not have to take core classes. I also wanted to have small classes, and lots of interaction. it was about the best program for ME not the "best program" on some arbitrary list. I guess it's just one of those things that gets to me. In HS there was so much emphasis put on getting into the best college. One of my best friends started at Northwestern, which is a GREAT school. #13 at the time. He absolutely LOVED it, but he transfered to Penn becuase it was ranked higher s(something like #5 at the time), and he was miserable at Penn. SO stupid!
ETA: I also got into similar programs at Top Tier colleges and got great scholarships too, but I had a friend who was in the scholarhsip program I got accepted to at a top tier school a yer ahead of me and they took away her scholarhsip the next year to give it to an incoming student to attract them. Basically they offered me HER money and she ended up coming home to brooklyn college because of money. Not everyone can afford those Ivy League and top tier schools.

Re: Totally rude question
I think that is very rude - Hofstra has some very great programs. My cousin in just graduated from Law School there and they are known for the great Law program they have there. I think it is very rude for people to put Hofstra down!

I know in Finance they do ask what your SAT score is. I went to interviews for a few major Hedge Funds and I had to provide a copy of my scores.

Yeah it's an easy way to get an idea of your mathematical and analytical ability.
But for this particular job it's 100% relevent because they want an SAT expert.
