Re: Toy shortages
I like to shop early so I am about halfway done. I do think it will be harder to get stuff as time goes on. I prefer to get tickets to things or gift cards to places like Urban Air. I hate toys and junk cluttering up my house and my kids are getting older so they don't need all the toys anymore.

We just went yesterday to order appliances for our unit and the refrigerator is back ordered till Dec. 31. My husband has been waiting for materials for a few of his jobs since April.
That's due to the chip shortage I believe. Appliance and cars are hit hard. I had to buy my car off lease because there were literally no cars to be had and the dealer told me when they do come in people will be paying over sticker for them due to the chip shortages. I was like no way- and just bought the car rather than turning it in. The sales guy was like, yeah that's a good move.
Yes, and I got the Fridge with the screen. Always have to be extra. LOL.
We were only able to put the order through at Best Buy, so who knows if it will even come end of the year. All other stores were not letting them put the order in.
You go to home depot and stuff is wiped out, we have to travel all over NJ for materials. Fun times.
Appliances have been so impossible to get. Last fall we ordered a new washer and dryer and those took about two months. In November we ordered a new cooktop, ovens, and dishwasher and all were backordered until this past April. It was insane, I feel your pain.
My friend just ordered all new appliances and they were told 6 mos. It's crazy.
My fear is something breaking. Like one day the fridge goes and now you're screwed!
I just ordered a new fridge exactly because of this. Two features on mine broke (icemaker and water in door)- things I could certainly live without, but it made me think that the rest of it might go soon. I ordered a new fridge last Monday and was told to expect to wait until Jan-Feb. They said there were 75people ahead of me waiting for the same fridge but they were expecting a delivery of 36 that week. 3 days later they called and said I could have it delivered TODAY! (as I'm sitting and waiting for the delivery guys right now) I have no idea how or why (guessing many of those 75 wound up canceling or getting something else), but I was completely shocked and happily surprised
ETA: I didn't get anything with the high end electronic features. I ordered the GE Profile French door. I was told they had the "regular" GE in stock right then, but I wanted the Profile, which now I'm really glad I didn't go with the regular one. They also would have allowed me to change my order to something in stock (if they had anything), if my current fridge broke and I needed something right away

Re: Toy shortages
I did see some cases of cat food in Target this weekend finally- but we had already ordered on Chewy. But the shelves in that aisle were scarce with stock and pretty empty still.
I went down the frozen aisle where they have the frozen snacks- wings, mini quiches etc and it was COMPLETELY empty. Like not one box of ANYTHING in the entire freezer case in the entire aisle. Just a line of empty freezer cases. It was weird. I think it's an intermittent problem. Certain things, certain stores etc

While I think the news might be exaggerating things a bit the fact is, there are a TON of shortages since COVID started. The supply chain is still a complete mess so no doubt there will be things that might be hard to get your hands on for Xmas, maybe not toys specifically but other items for sure.
I am just going to shop like I normally do and figure it out as I go. There is nothing specific that I am looking for right now that is a "must get" so I am not stressing all that much about it.
Same here. My kids have no idea what they want for Christmas so I am going to be scrambling around. Hopefully they dont want the "it" toy, whatever that may be.
On that note, what are the "it" toys this year?

The paper product aisle in my stop & shop has been completely wiped out- no paper towels for about a month, but they did have some tp, just not all brands & this week they had nothing. No tissues or napkins either.
Pasta was extremely limited too.
I don't know if it is fear buying-- I haven't heard a lot of talk about potential shortages this time, but maybe I have just tuned it all out.
Pasta was extremely limited too.
My friend and I are in a "race" to see which gets here first- the car she ordered last year or the sofa I ordered in May.

Walmart was packed with everything. Try there if you need something.

It was utterly bizarre.

I am finding this issue with Lunchables at Target and Walgreens. My sons lunch for tomorrow is very interesting to say the least. Lol.

Yeah, that is from the global chip shortage. There are lots of cars at plants in the US that are made but without chips. I now see the way cars are made here make sense. When I got a new car here, I had to wait about 3 months for it to be finished. I wondered why they didn’t have lots with ready made cars, especially since it was a BMW and they are made and designed 20 mins from me.
I wonder how this will affect the new models.
That being said, I haven’t noticed a supply chain problem here. It has been in the news, but I don’t see anything abnormal. It has always been the case that one supermarket is out of something, so I have to go to another one. Or that most produce and meat is half gone on Saturdays because everything is closed on Sundays. I generally visit a total of 4 different supermarkets on average every month anyway.
I did have a problem buying a new computer here in May, but I wanted to order one with an English keyboard because I can’t stand the German keyboard. I just ordered a new one from the US and it was here in a week. I was limited in choice, though.

Yes everywhere. My lease was up last month. I ended up having to buy my car off lease. There were no cars at all. And the ones they would order or try to get were so expensive my lease payment would have been more than double. The sales guy took me aside and pretty much said, you didn't hear this from me, but you should just buy the car you're returning. It had crazy low mileage. He said I probably won't be able to get you anything anytime soon and the cars that come in are selling for over sticker. The car shortage has been a nationwide issue for months now

Yeah I heard about the shortage but didn't think it was that bad. I am getting things all the time in the mail and email about getting a new car so I am figuring these places do have inventory. We will probably so this weekend just to get an idea as I do not want to go over what I pay now and have an idea of what I want (not what I REALLY want but what I can afford) so I figured it would be easy for the dealer.

Oh yes I was getting that too. And even after i bought the car someone from the dealer who didn't realize called me up asking me if I wanted to "turn in my lease and upgrade". I said to her, well funny story, I was just there today and bought my car off lease because you guys had NO inventory at all. So let me ask you this- what did you have in mind for me to "upgrade" to? She got real quiet. They can get you cars but it will take a while and the prices are astronomical. He quote me over double the lease payment for the same car I had. I know the prices of cars rise every 3 years so when I turn in my lease I do expect to pay a bit more, but not double.

Yes, we are paying close to what we had been paying on 2 leases for 1 lease.
ETA we did get the car right away because we took whatever was in stock.

Yeah that is insane. I honestly don't want my car as I like getting a new car every 3 years and doing minimal maintenance to it. I would even take last years model if they have it so that might have to be an option.
Last year's model cars are going first now because that the only place where you may get a tiny bit of savings. The dealer would LOVE to have your lease back because there is probably at least 8-10k of buyout equity in it. By trading it in you are basically paying them that money with nothing to show for it. Anybody that is returning a car that's 3 year off a lease (bought pre pandemic) is lighting money on fire. Don't just assume because the lease is up you don't have options.
If anything you need to go into the dealer and tell them "I know my buyout is 20k and I know the DEALER trade in value of my car is 29k". If you want to sell your new car for 60k, give me your best price and then take off another 9k to account for the difference in my lease trade in. So if their normal best price is MSRP, at least you can get them to take something decent off the MSRP. Some dealers may balk, but a smart dealer will realize that you know your stuff and can still make money on the deal.

When we got our head we were told we got lucky. It was the only one in the state. There absolutely are shortages.
We needed a car immediately last month and 3 dealerships I called had no cars. None! I started going down a list and took the first car that was in stock. When I say the first car, I mean literally the first car. I had to double check what kind of car it was AFTER I said we’d take it.
It was utterly bizarre.
This is in NY? My lease is up soon and I need to get something new. I have an idea of what I want, just need to go and sit down and go through all of that car stuff. Hopefully it is not too much of a big deal.
I am aware I have choices. I guess I will have to just go and sit down and see what they have as I don't want to keep the car if I don't possibly have to. Like your numbers though. Wish I could afford a car that much

I wanted a new one too, that's actually the reason I started leasing, but there was no way I was paying what they wanted to just have the new model of my car. I love the car and really just wanted a new one of the same car. I only had 16K miles on it- thanks to not being allowed to go to work for almost 2 years I barely use it- so it was a no brainer to keep it.
Buying off lease isn't normally a good financial idea either, but these definitely aren't normal times. I'm just glad to have a car right now

Yes especially considering I had a car coming off lease in perfect condition with only 16K miles on it. I'd have been a fool to hand them back that car right now. They'd have loved it though.

Yeah you made the right decision. Just an FYI there is nothing wrong with buying a car off lease and paying CASH for it, assuming the car's value is worth at least what the buyout is. That's actually a good decision because you are buying a car you know the history of at a better than market rate. If you had an accident or a mark on the carfax then I wouldn't do it because diminished value comes into play.
It's generally not a good financial decision to finance / take out a used car loan on a lease buyout. The reason is you already paid higher than normal interest on the first three or so years on the lease. Because of that it's generally not a good idea to continue paying more interest on a used car loan.
There are exceptions as in this market if the car's value is way over the buyout even with the added interest you are still making out on the deal. But something to keep in mind.
