Train accident - UPDATE
Be ready for delays if you or someone you know is going through Hicksville.
DH just called me from the train. They hit somebody.
He is in the 1st car. He was awaken suddenly. He heard the engineer curse.

UPDATE:
The train is about to start moving again.
Apparently, a woman who is 45-50 was on the side of the tracks and jumped on the tracks and walks directly towards the train. It's a suicide! The engineer could not stop the train on time to avoid her. So sad!
I also feel terrible for the engineer. How do you go home and relax after a day of work? I never understood why people who jump under cars, etc.. can't do it on their own without traumatizing others for life.

I think that's the one at 5:30 or 5:35 from Brooklyn. I am pretty sure it's a direct. But it will be blocking the line.
Since he called at 6pm. I am thinking he was before Mineola or around there at the time he called.

Service is suspended in both directions affecting the Ronkonkoma, Oyster Bay and Port Jefferson Branches due to a train striking an unauthorized person on the tracks near New Hyde Park Station

I was just on the phone with my Mom. She is stuck in the train at Queens Village. They have moved the train up to the platform so people may exit. They just keep saying it was a pedestrian accident.

DH said it was someone. He kept hearing that the person "jumped" in front of the train. Since he is in the 1st car, they knew they hit someone almsot immediately. DH said there was "no mistake it was a person".
Since DH is on the train that hit someone, I don't know when he is coming home. I am sure they are still at the scene.

That is so sad. My dad is a retired engineer from LIRR. He says things like that haunt them in their sleep, cause people jump and there is no way of stopping a train going so fast in time to avoid hitting the person.

My Mom just got home. She walked for 40 minutes...she just wanted off that train.
That poor person. I wish she could have gotten help before doing something so tragic and final.

I got more details. They sent the engineer home and another one took over when the train restarted. It was the 2nd time he had hit someone in his career.
DH said that the engineer screamed NO and everyone looked at the front of the car and 1 second later they heard/felt the hit.

I believe that they get at least a 1 week leave and therapy. Not enough unfortunately, but at least it is a little bit.

Yes it was at New Hyde Park. DH was stuck on a train for over two hours as that is where he gets off to come home. What a tragedy.

Ug.. i'm so sorry for your DH that he was there when this happened.. We were just talking about this the other day when there were delays on the Babylon line in the afternoon because someone did the same thing. i really feel for those LIRR drivers that have this happen to them. They must feel so powerless and awful when someone chooses to jump in front of the train and they can't stop in time.
I can't even imagine how they feel

You're so right, it's really awful for them I am sure. I wonder if they get some sort of training or warning that it could happen. For someone to jump in front of a train I doubt they're really thinking that clearly about how they're going to affect their own families let alone the conductors

I copied and pasted the LIRR email that was sent out. They always call it an "unauthorized person".
They also used to say occasionally if it was a fatality, but recently I haven't seen that beind said. They probably changed their stance on that.

my friend once told me that once it is too late to stop - they are supposed to turn around so they dont see it happen
