Posted by smdl I also feel terrible for the engineer. How do you go home and relax after a day of work? I never understood why people who jump under cars, etc.. can't do it on their own without traumatizing others for life.
You're so right, it's really awful for them I am sure. I wonder if they get some sort of training or warning that it could happen. For someone to jump in front of a train I doubt they're really thinking that clearly about how they're going to affect their own families let alone the conductors
I can't imagine what these conductors must see and how they cope!
I wonder how often this occurs? As there are times it is not reported - a co worker did the exact same thing this past October, but at a different train station, but her death was kept mute from the news.

Re: Train accident - UPDATE
Per DH, it went too fast. She was on the side and before you know it she jumped on the tracks facing the train. By the time the engineer screamed 1 second later she was hit. DH said it happened in a split second. Lots of people who usually take the train were calling DH tonight to make sure he was OK. They were stuck for over 1.5 hour on the tracks until it was cleared to go. DH told them that he was "OK". But everybody in the 1st car he was in were a bit shaken by the accident. That's understandable!!!! What a tough way to end a long work week!

My DH is an engineer on the LIRR. While this has not happened to him, he has seen how it has affected his friends and co-workers. It is incredibly tramaumitizing for all involved.

Re: Train accident - UPDATE
I can't imagining ending it all on the LIRR tracks.
It has to be so bad that you would throw yourself in front of a train. What a cry for help.
I was delayed as we got into Jamaica and took a Babylon train to Wantagh.
It's such a shame that this happens.

That is so sad. My dad is a retired engineer from LIRR. He says things like that haunt them in their sleep, cause people jump and there is no way of stopping a train going so fast in time to avoid hitting the person.
DH just got home and is now playing with DS and hugging him.
I got more details. They sent the engineer home and another one took over when the train restarted. It was the 2nd time he had hit someone in his career.
DH said that the engineer screamed NO and everyone looked at the front of the car and 1 second later they heard/felt the hit.
Yup they go through some trauma in their career.

Re: Train accident - UPDATE
OMG how freaky to be reading this cuz yesterday we were coming home from a party and had to take the train at Central Islip where there was a really bad accident. The train was heading towards the CI station and a car was crossing over the tracks and the train hit the car. I heard it was also a woman. They sent busses over to CI and took us to Deer Park where we then caught a train.
