train vent - Noncommuters should

Be given their own train cars like cattle so they can yell at eachother while everyone else sleeps. There are a group of 4 people. 2 are in the 4 seater and 2 are sitting behind them and they are yelling at eachother. I finally had to ask them to quiet down bc its giving me a headache plus everyone is trying to sleep. The one guys like its not a hotel but they have lowered their voices a little.

The LIRR should have quiet cars. Some of the regular commuters are just as loud and annoying.

I would totally support separate cars for monthly ticket holders!

All of the Virgin Pendolino trains here in the UK have quiet cars, and guess what...they are anything BUT quiet. But..we also have the option of upgrading to first class for a small fee.

I suggested quiet cars to the LIRR several times and the response was that an "overwhelming majority of riders wanted to be able to talk and use their phones on the train". I followed up with making just one or two cars quiet on different trains to see how it goes and the response was "an overwhelming majority of riders wanted to be able to talk and use their cell phones on the train." I am willing to be a quiet car would be SRO.

I'd be willing to pay an extra $10 or $20 a month for a quiet car.

I can't stand it...there was a regular commuter sitting behind me this AM, YAPPING away on her cell. DH was peeking thru the seat going "chirp, chirp, chirp" lol She was going on and on for 20 minutes about how she couldn't find her work ID yesterday and where it could've possibly gone?

One time on the bus, I got in a fight with a girl who had a full commute conversation about what she was going to wear that night? I told her to wear the black dress and to shut the f up. Chat Icon

Who the hell are these people talking to at 7am?

Please note, if you call me at 7am with a non emergency, you're getting hung up on ...

Re: train vent - Noncommuters should

This thread makes me LoL I feel your pain.

I am not on LIEU but we have the same issues here on S with the XBusses and the Ferry. I can not tell you how many times there have been nasty fights on the ferry bc people are just rude.

In the mornings there are issues bc of the HS kids that take the ferry to school who literally scream, sing, dance, and yell for the entire trip. Then there are preachers who stroll the decks for the entire trip preaching, then you have people yell back at them, some people start singing the national anthem, it's a bunch of animals really Chat Icon

When I would commute to the city I would meet up with my friend, say hello and then put my headphones on and pass out or sleep.

I had a girl behind me this morning on speaker phone with Verizon wireless. Apparently the dumb *** forgot her password. The best part was she gave her full name and last 4 of her social to the operator, and the majority of the train car as well. Yeah, that's a smart idea.

I take NJ Transit and the first and last car of every train during rush hour are designated quiet cars. I know that they were doing it as a pilot for a while, but not sure if it's a permanent thing. I love it!

Many times these inconsiderate people can still be heard over music. The incident I described above is a good example. I heard her whole conversation and I had my headphones in with my ipod volume a bit over 1/2.

See now, I'm a non-commuter and this is one of my huge pet peeves. I don't want to hear YOUR music on the train. Chat Icon

I guess it's really a no-win situation. Chat Icon

Re: train vent - Noncommuters should

NJ Transit has this on their trains into midtown - as to pp - I think it's a full time program now (they haven't added it in the ones to Hoboken because many of them are small).

I have a lot of problems with non-commuters too - there are a lot of people who like to talk - a lot - at 7;30am!! I've moved my seat numerous times (I like to try to sit in the same car until it gets overrun by loud people)! One of the loud afternoon guys befriended me - and I had to avoid him for awhile.

I checked with a few people when I first got mine and used them. You can't hear my music when I listen to my iPod, only I can.

A good set is totally worth it. Usually the ones you can hear are the cheaper ones and the ones that come with the iPod.

This one of my pet peeves as well. I hate being in a train/subway car where someone is playing "DJ". That's why I said my ipod volume was at the 1/2 way point Chat Icon I probably could have drowned her out at full volume but then I would have been just as bad as she was on her phone.

Re: train vent - Noncommuters should

i am non commuter and I will say I honestly never really take the train; I am more the type of person that would rather drive in then take the train, but I kinda have to agree with the guy with its not a hotel. I dont get why people are expected to not be talking on the phone or talking to each other?

While i dont think it is nesccary to be screaming at each other, or talking on speaker ( i think this is obnoxious any where you are in public theres no need for it) I dont see any problem with people having conversations in person or on the phone.

I have done this before and dont get me wrong if someone cant hear me on the phone without screaming I will tell them I have to call them back, but i think its perfect time to catch up with people and i never knew that I "shouldnt" be doing this.

And if I am with someone on the train am I really not expected to have a conversation with them because other people dont think i should.

It's actually announced on trains to be considerate of your fellow riders and keep cell phone calls short and low. Move to the vestibule if you need to have a lengthy conversation.

I don't care if you talk just use your inside voice and keep it low. We all have to exist with each other in a confined space and it's considerate to not disturb others who may want to catch up on their sleep, reading, work..etc..if you were commuting everyday for 3 hours a day you would want quiet time too.
