Re: TRAINING FOR A 10K
I personally can't run more than 4 miles on a treadmill without getting bored out of my mind, so I do most of my runs outdoors, unless the weather is really bad.
I do like to do some speedwork on treadmills when its rainy.
I used Hal Higdon's 10k plan for my first and I did great - you can google Hal Higdon novice 10k!
My first 10k for me was about endurance - I didn't focus at all on speed - I just wanted to complete the distance.

Re: TRAINING FOR A 10K
JMHO - you are running the 10K on the roads, so might as well get used to them. Do you have to run outside all the time? no, but I would make sure that you do at least one run (preferably your long run) outside. Getting used to wind and weather and other elements will help on race day - especially knowing what clothing works for you.

Re: TRAINING FOR A 10K
My first 10k was in May and I began training the December before (so I did it in 6 months). most of my training was on the treadmill due to the weather. I started by running about 2-3 miles 5 days a week and I'd gradually increase it. I know there are alot of plans out there but I did it by feel.
Make sure at some point you run the full distance (or more- I did 7 miles) to get a feel for it. I'd try to do at least a few 5 milers too!
Good luck!!

Re: TRAINING FOR A 10K
I do a combination of outside and treadmill. Since I have to run at 5am and it's very dark out, I sometimes opt for the treadmill. I especially like it for speedwork. It can be boring, but when I do intervals, it's not bad. In fact, last winter, I got the treadmill so I could be accessible since I just had baby #2. Both of my children are under 3, so it fits my lifestyle right now. Not that I'm saying do the treadmill over the roads, but i will say that I trained for a half marathon last winter doing almost all my runs on the treadmill and did one of my best races.
I think the advice the others gave you is great; try to do a few longer runs to get used to the distance. I love 10ks, I wish there were more of them on Long Island.
