Transition from bottle to cup for those who's ped recommended skipping sippy cup
Our ped recommended throwing out the tops to the sippy cups and just teaching DS how to drink straight from the cup. DS is now 15 months and this has gone fine. He picks up the cup and drinks from it on his own. My question is, what do you do when you are out at a restaurant with DC or at someone's house? I'm still bringing bottles with me, but want him off the bottle completely. If I give him a cup he drinks out of it, but makes a very big mess (which is expected). Should I just give him the cup when we are out and bring extra clothes and pray he doesn't throw the cup full of milk or water all over the place?
TIA!

instead of the "sippy cup" give him the straw cups. will be alot less mess for you and its not the sippy cup.

Re: Transition from bottle to cup for those who's ped recommended skipping sippy cup
I am considering this as well. My DS is 13 months. He can take sips of water if I hold the cup without the top, or I use one of the cheap sippies that have no valve and he drinks a little from it. Any cup that has a top with a lid he is completely uninterested in. I keep trying, but I am tempted to just get him to drink out of a regular cup.
My dilemma becomes daycare - I know they aren't going to go for this and want him to use a sippy cup with a valve. I am interested in other responses.....

Why did your ped recommend this?
usually for speech issues. my speech therapist said not to use sippy cup but to use the straw cups or regular cups. that way the muscles dont relax to much.

Ahh, we use both the straws and the sippies. Thanks!

Even the straw cups confuse me There are the ones that have the straw that flips over, the flexible straws, etc. Then, I look at the ages on them and a lot of them say 2 yrs +
Can you recommend which ones worked best for you?

i bought them all!!! the ones the boys learned to us was the sports sipper one from nuby. that was the easyist one use and the most spill proof. my boys have used them since they were 6months. (they still use them) then i moved on to alllll the other ones. but honestly the sports sipper was/is the best. the speach therapist like it best becaue the "straw" part wasnt so long.

Re: Transition from bottle to cup for those who's ped recommended skipping sippy cup
I did buy the ones with the straw thinking that would be a good idea for this transition. He did fight it at first, but took to it fine. The thing is, then he stopped drinking from the cup on his own, so I stopped. I am so confused.
My ped recommended skipping the sippy cup for the same reasons, speech development and that he sees it as just a 'modified bottle'. I have a close friend who is a nure practitioner in a ped office and she said the doctors there say the exact same thing to their patients.

Re: Transition from bottle to cup for those who's ped recommended skipping sippy cup
I"m an SLP and don't care for sippy cups...for speech issues and b/c kids suck on them the same way they suck on a bottle but they have to tip their head more. Go for the pop up straw kind or there is even a cup with a top that looks like the thermos coffee cups we use (saw it in BRU yesterday). You could have your LO use those thermos type cups, if they are small enough, b/c many of them can close off the top to prevent spills.
