Transitioning to a new classroom in daycare

DS just turned 1 last week. He's in the middle of transitioning from the infant room at daycare to the wobbler room. Last week he was fine, playing with the big kids for a few hours before going back to the infant room. Today they tried to transition him right away in the morning and he wasn't having it. Very clingy with me, very upset Chat Icon

Part of it is he's very attached to his teachers in the infant room and he's still getting to know the new teachers. I know it will eventually be ok and he will love it but right now I'm feeling guilty that he's having a rough day. Plus I made it worse by checking in on him (he goes to daycare in the building I work in and the parents are allowed to visit). I tried to hide so he couldn't see me but he spotted me and flipped out. Chat Icon

So now I'm trying my best to stay away and let him transition without me interfering. It's just so hard, I miss the little guy and I want to know he's ok. I guess I'm just looking for support and the strength to leave the poor kid alone Chat Icon

Transitioning to a new classroom in daycare

DD just went through this, moving from the 1 to 2 yr old class. It really took her a good 2 months to truly adjust. She was so attached to her prior teachers, so it was hard. But now that she's comfortable with 1 new teacher now, she doesn't mind being dropped off. I felt so bad for her for a while, but they will get used to the change and love all the new activities, kids and fun things in the next class! You will see such a change, because of all the different things he will do now!!

Yes same here.
It broke my heart to see her so upset those first few days, but she soon got just as attached to the new teacher (if not more so)
It's hard- there are SO many transitions in daycare- everytime you turn around they are moving to a new room.
It's so hard on us as the moms- but in the long run I thnk it's good for them- gets them used to change and transition.
Hang in there- it will be fine in no time!

Totally normal. It took DS about a week of being in the room full time to really be fine. He has trouble with each change but the daycare I use is great and now knows the things he really has a hard time with.

Re: Transitioning to a new classroom in daycare

I used to see DS EVERY day for lunch when he was in the infant room. I BF'd & it was a great way to keep my supply up & just have some snuggle time.

Once he turned a year old he started to realize I was coming & going & it made it very hard on him to see me leave again when lunch was over.

They have an open door policy at his daycare (meaning I can come & go as I please), but it was too hard on him & they kind of hinted at it too.

It was REALLY hard at first, but as time went on I found I enjoyed having that time to get errands done or just go for a walk.

You'll get there!Chat Icon

Thanks everyone! Today went much better. No crying when I left and I just spoke to his teacher who said he's doing great. Hopefully this means he's adjusting ok. Whew!
