Transitioning to Sippy Cup
Thomas is 15 months today.
He has been down to one bottle a day (his morning bottle) since 12 months. He hasn't had a bedtime bottle (or sippy) since then either. His morning bottle was the only one he drank a good amount from, that's why at 12 months, we transitioned to sippy during the day. I tried to take away the morning bottle this week. Monday and Tuesday, he drank a couple of ounces from sippy, Wednesday a couple of sips, today NOTHING!! He totally refused it and wouldn't even take a sip. What do I do? Do I go back to giving him the morning bottle because he would drink 8 oz. and now he's hardly getting any milk because he only drinks a couple of ounces out of each cup during the day, or do I stick it out with the cup?
Thanks!

Re: Transitioning to Sippy Cup
I would say stick it out with the cup. He'll drink it when he wants it.
ETA Having a bit less milk for a few days as he transitions isn't gonna hurt him.

Re: Transitioning to Sippy Cup
Stick w/the cup!! My nephew is 22 months and NEVER took a sippy cup. My sister stopped the bottle almost 2 months ago and keeps offering the sippy cup as per the advice of the pedi. He keeps refusing She tries to get him liquids in other ways, purees, yogurt, etc etc. Apparently as long as he as wet diapers he's OK.

stick with the cup!!! DS is having the hardest time transitioning. A friend of mine said she just took the bottle away cold turkey and her kids didnt drink at all at first but then learned that the only way they could was thru the sippy.....now, if only i could do that

I say give him a couple of days - I bet soon enough he'll be drinking all of it!

Re: Transitioning to Sippy Cup
My opinion (and very much just that...an opinion) would be to stick it out. If you go back he'll learn that you are flexible.
My pediatrician told us that many children go on a milk strike...and that's fine. Just give him a substitute - yogurt, cheese, and other foods high in calcium. Eventually he will come around to drink whatever you put in the sippy cup.
Lucas was not happy to lose his morning bottle - much more upset over this than the nighttime one (to my surprise) but he had no choice. Sounds hard and maybe it is but that's the decision I made. He has been off the bottle completely for over a month now. He drains his milk sippy cups and doesn't take bottles from the other kids at daycare who are free to carry them. He shows no interest. Fortunately he never went on a complete milk strike but we did have to substitute for a while in the AM. My doctor said he needs 12 - 16 oz per day so that helped me manage my anxiety over it.

Re: Transitioning to Sippy Cup
I had/have the same problem. DS is ok getting rid of the bottle, but then absolutely REFUSES to drink any milk. He does eat cheese and yogurt, but I chose to let him have the bottle. He gets 1 in the AM and 1 about 1/2 before bed. My ped feels bottles are ok until 2 if not given in the crib. DS will be 2 in 2 weeks and we go to ped the day after his b-day so I am sure ped will say no more bottles, no more milk, but we'll see. I just feel milk is very important during these early yrs and I didn't want him not to have any.
I have never been a milk drinker and if DS is going to stop drinking it all together I can deal with him having a bottle a little longer.
Needless to say if there is a #2, they will get some formula in their cup as soon as they start using one, which for DS was around 6 mos old.

Re: Transitioning to Sippy Cup
Thanks again everyone!!
One more question - I'm still trying to find "perfect" sippy cup. Thomas will drink juice, water and yogurt drink out of any cup I offer him. He just doesn't like milk and especially doesn't like it out of a cup!
Is it confusing to him to keep giving him different cups, or does it not matter since he now knows how to drink from one?
