Travel after the baby's born

how long should you wait to travel with the baby. My in-laws want the baby, my husband and I to drive out to Pitt. PA (at least will be 10 hour trip with the baby) for Thanksgiving. Our baby will only be 2 months old. What are your thoughts???

I wouldn't commit 100% but really it shouldn't be a problem. The only way it could be a problem is if you have a really fussy baby or a baby that hates the car seat. DD hated it, screamed no matter what so for us at 2 months a 10 hour car ride wouldn't have been an option but normally it shouldn't be a big deal. The baby would sleep most of the way I think.

I think it will be much easier at two months than it would be as the baby becomes more alert and eventually mobile...

wait though, didn't I hear that the baby shouldn't be so far from home for the first 3 months. If they get sick they can't take medicine and we'd have to go to a PA hospital. What about that kind of stuff

DS will be exactly 3 months when we go to Florida next month.

Traveling with a baby will always be "taking a risk" but it wouldn't stop me from doing it.

ETA: We are going to a very middle of nowhere part of Florida WAY more than Pittsburgh.

Oh and if you are concerened about the drive, is it possible to fly?

Well, I've heard after 3 months it's not as big of a risk in my eyes because they can take medicine.

Well, my SIL took my neice to the same trip we are taking DS to this year, she was 7 months old last summer and had a double ear infection and they had to go to the hospital anyway.

I *think* if you aren't in your city with any age baby you'd have to go to the hospital to get an antibiotic.

We are taking a trip when the baby is about three months so this makes me feel much better that I'm not the only one doing it.

I am excited, but now I am starting to get nervous b/c we are down to the wire (well, for my insane butt, we are, we leave in 3 weeks) and I feel like I am not ready at all. LOL. He is going to need so much STUFF!Chat Icon

We're also planning on traveling to fl when the baby will be 3-4 mos. We might fly but I think it will be easier to pack everything up in the car. .

I guess it depends on your baby's temperment & how comfortable you all are

it's so easy to travel in a car with a young baby! they sleep so much and car rides tend to put them to sleep even more! for the most part, you and your DH will be the crankiest people for being cooped up in the car that long and your baby will be rather happy. the packing might be more of a challenge than the travelling!Chat Icon

you'd be shocked at what you CAN give them...if your 2 month old happens to come down with something, call your pediatritian...they'll tell you over the phone the exact medicine to buy and how much to give. often, they can (at early ages) have the same doses listed on the packaging...they just don't want you self-medicating unless it's necessary...so the labels say "consult a physician."

my 3 day old was on zantac...tylenol is nothing.

Re: Travel after the baby's born

They can start going to public places at around 2 months. I would still limit contact with school age kids.

As for the suggestion of flying vs. driving, I think travelling by car is "safer". We all know that people get sick in airplanes due to sick people travelling and the circulating air in airplanes.

I believe it is only the first 8 weeks that you really have to worry about, but check with pediatrician to be safe

Re: Travel after the baby's born

My sister got on a plane with her DD at 9 weeks for a week long trip to Las Vegas. Of course she had me to baby-sit for the entire week Chat Icon but her pediatrician gave DD her two month shots and away we all went.
