Travel, Airplanes, Carseats and all that fun stuff
You'd think I'd have all the answers by now being that I've traveled by air with Jake about 6 times but I've never had to bring our carseat. We always rent a car with the carseat.
Well, this time we have to bring it and it weighs a TON (Britax Marathon). Maybe I'm just a wuss but I can't imagine having to carry that thing on the train from Long Term Parking @ JFK to the terminal. Do you check it at the curb/check-in area with your luggage?
Better yet, where do people get those carseat/stroller combo thingies that I see being pushed around in airports? Would I have to buy that?
I did a (admittedly half-azzed) search and didn't find my answer.

Get the backpack that carries the carseat. It's the best thing ever.

Re: Travel, Airplanes, Carseats and all that fun stuff
I checked mine...but I did not buy a seat for Josh either, so I wasn't going to use it on the plane.
I threw it into a laundry bag, tied it up and checked it curbside. I was told carseat was free to check, so I also threw some clothes into the bag too.

That is far. We did it last year, but with the infant seat. One step ahead has the wheels that go on the car seat too....
We are checking ours in a laundry bag.

Re: Travel, Airplanes, Carseats and all that fun stuff
We got a seat for Emily and so we brought the Marathon on the plane with us. It was a pain to carry around but worth it. I liked having my own car seat and I think it made her feel comfortable on the airplane too. On the way home she even fell esleep which I don't think she'd have done if we didn't have the carseat with us.
As far as check-in, we didn't check it, but my mom dropped us off at the curb and then parked the car and walked back to meet us. That way we didn't need to carry it with us. She traveled with us on this trip.

Buy buy baby sells this thing (cheaper than one step ahead) It attaches to the car seat, almost like a luggage trolly.
They have other stuff too (like wheely bags, etc) BBB

Re: Travel, Airplanes, Carseats and all that fun stuff
We will be lugging two of them very soon through Newark Won't be checking ours as they have seats on the plane.
I can't help you on getting it to the terminal. We are 4 adults and 2 children so we hired transportation to the airport... I'm guessing a tractor trailer is coming to pick us up...lol. We are going to have to skycap it at that point between luggage, carry-ons, a double stroller and two Britax car seats.
Just a tip to install the car seat on the plane: We are doing pre-boarding but I'm only sending DH on-board so he can get the carseats hooked up, I read somewhere to do that so it keeps DC on the plane for a little less time.
Good luck

Re: Travel, Airplanes, Carseats and all that fun stuff
We did exactly that in April. We parked in long term and flew Jet Blue out of JFK, not realizing that the Jet Blue terminal was under construction and we had to take a bus! We put the carseat (Marathon too!) upside down over the suitcase with wheels and pulled it. I don't know if I am explaining that well, but it was fine. Then when we checked our luggage, we just had to carry it a little way and gate checked it. It really wasn't that bad. . . .. . but, DH might disagree. He was the one dealing with it!

THAT looks like what I might want... gotta see how much it is... THANK YOU!!!
I don't plan to use it on the plane. I've bought him a seat everytime since he turned 2 but never used a carseat.
Some good ideas here ladies, the backpack, the laundry bag... keep them coming!

This is what we're doing. Gate checking the stroller. We have the marathon also & i'm flying home without DD to help. We looked into the GoGo Kidz wheelie thing and decided against it after reading pretty negative reviews on Amazon. Sounds like it's more trouble than it's worth. We also looked into the stroller/carseat thing, but I do not like the idea of DD being practically on the ground for our entire trip.

Yeah the Gogo sounds good but for $80 bucks I'm not sure...
I'll be sure to check out those reviews - thanks for the heads up on that.
Anyone have something like this - backpack with wheels? Is this what you meant monkeybride? Image Attachment(s):

Ours is similar to that but it doesn't have wheels. I would think the wheels would be a nice feature.

Re: Travel, Airplanes, Carseats and all that fun stuff
We have the GoGo Kidz wheelie thing. We travel alot with DD, so it was worth it to us (although now that airfare is so crazy expensive I doubt we'll be traveling as much.) Personally we love it. It has made our lives so much easier. DH has taken it out of the car with DD asleep, put the wheels on, & we've wheeled her sleeping until we got to security. It was great!

We used this on a recent trip and it was great!! We also have a Marathon. Elizabeth was quite the spectacle at the airport!

That's what I used on the way home from FL with my marathon. I traveled with DS by myself and on the way there it was torture. So when I arrived I ordered the backpack and had it shipped to FL. Traveling home was a breeze!!!!!!

That's what we did with one of our Boulevards. The other one I wore like a backpack. If you loosen the shoulder straps, you can wear the seat on your back.
You can sort of see the purple seat upside down on top of the luggage. I was the one that carried that entire stack through the airport. DW had the kids and a stroller. We managed..... barely..... Image Attachment(s):

Well we just got back from Texas & put her carseat in a laundry bag & checked it in at curbside & then at the airport we used the rented metal luggage carts.

This was after we checked the PnP, and several large pieces of luggage.... It was REALLY fun carrying all of what you see PLUS the other pieces of luggage from the baggage claim to the car rental place....

Re: Travel, Airplanes, Carseats and all that fun stuff
There are bags with both straps for backback carrying, and wheels so you can wheel it. If you have one of those metal luggage attachments with wheels you can use that with a bungee cord I have seen people do that and it is probably cheaper than the bag. There is also a similar product like the luggage pull that attaches to a stroller but they are about $80-90.
Depending on the stroller you have I have people tell me that they turn their seat upside down and but the sitting part on the back of their stroller and push it (but I don't think that is optimal).
